I don't think anything anyone will tell me will make a difference, but I was wondering what people know/think about the seminaries for American girls in Israel. To be more specific I have a very bright very frum (but not super yeshivish) daughter in 12th grade. She wants to go to an "acedemic" place. Her seminary coordinator wants her to go to BJJ but she doesn't want to and I don't think she'll be happy there, though she is planning to apply and since I went there (and she has top marks) I think she'll get in. Right now she is between Mesores Rochel and Michlala (and yes I know they are not in the same place on the religious spectrum and that Mesores Rochel is super selective and she very well might not get in) Anyone know anything? Have any opinions? Thanks |

Anything I know is about 12 years past due... A close HS friend went to Michlala, it was considered VERY modern then, though she loved it. It is very academic, my friend continued on to stern college when she came home. BJJ, ten years ago was considered a place that would only take top marks, and super yeshivish. Girls who had been class presidents, GO, or chesed heads, need not apply....It also had a strict pleated skirt and button down shirt dress code back in the day. But no one I know has gone there in years so I cannot tell you if that is still the case. |

BJJ-AFAIK they still have the dress code. She has top marks and also is GO president. But it is definitely more yeshivish than she is. But it was more yeshivish than I was and I still enjoyed my year there, though that was 25 years ago and I lot has changed. Michlala is not as modern as people living in Brooklyn think, my 2 nieces went there within the last 12 years and they are very very frum and actually role models for how I want my daughter to end up - married to men who work and are talmedi chachamim, who have a seder and go to minyan every day, but have a secular education and work to support their families. It is actually the best fit for her, except for its untrue reputation. I do not see her going to Stern, but I can't say it would bother me, except for the price tag - she would have to get an academic scholarship to be able to go there, or it is Queens College (or maybe Tuoro if she gets a scholarship there). |

Michlala is not "very modern" these days and is the place the right-wing-modern, intellectual girls go. Sounds like it would be a fit. |

Darchei Bina has 2 negatives and one positive, but she is not considering it. The negatives are both related to the girls that go there - one is that they are not as smart and two is that they are not as "frum" as the other places, even Michlala. The positives is that they are known to have the best teachers, though some of them they share with Michlala. The girls that she knows that are going there are not her type. I agree that Michlala is the best fit. But she isn't sure especially because the teachers in her current school are trying to steer her to a more right wing place (I guess that is their job). I don't want to pull the "I am the parent and it's my money so you go where I say" because my parents did that to me and although I had a very good experience, I promised myself at the time that I wouldn't do the same thing to my child (though it is tempting) does anyone think it would be disastrous to send her to a place more right wing than she is? (assuming she gets in - in some ways if she only gets into Michlala the decision will be easy) |

Not as smart? And not as frum? Really? The two girls that I know who went there were both extremely bright and studious - and the "chenyuk' of their crowd (again, right-wing-modern). Maybe b/c they were from "out of town" it was different. They both had a great experience though. I don't think it would be disasterous for her to go to a more right-wing place. But it has to be what she wants to do. |

The friends I have that went to michlala, all are left wing MO, that is why I have that impression f the place. :) But like I said its been 12 years since I even thought of this stuff.... (And since I only have boys, it likely will never be on my radar again lol ) |

The girls I knew who went there are also right-wing modern. I don't think its a problem to go somewhere more right BUT she needs to know what she is walking into and that it comes from her. |

Darchei Bina has changed - my friends daughters went there about 5 years ago and it was more like Michlala. It is now more modern and not as academic as it was then. The girls from her school that are going to go there are not from the top class (they are tracked for Chumash and Navi) I am letting her choose, so I hope she realizes. I have spoken to her at length about maintaining openmindedness and I think I've been moderately successful. She spent last Shabbos in Baltimore at the Bais Yaakov convention and met a mix of girls - but believe it or not several of them are planning to go to Michlala. The rest are all applying to BJJ and Mesores Rochel (which is a reason why she wont get it - even though she is a top girl, when 700 girls apply for 75 spots, the math tells the story). And of course she got her share of a ridiculous speech which she appears to have been able to filter out intelligently (about texting leading straight to Gehenom). |

If you mean literally 25 years ago (85-86) then they went with me. You can PM me their names if you want. |

My MIL went to Michlala in the early 70s. Her parents were students of "the Rav" (Soloveitchik). She was among the first yoatzot to finish their studies at Nishmat and she teaches at Nishmat and Yakar, and is invited to speak/teach in the U.S. as well. Michlala is definitely NOT "left-wing" MO! |
