For the edification of those who were questioning, and because I was starting to wonder if I was imagining things, I went back to look it up. I went to "China shel Chana" (English version is "Bread, Fire, Water"), published by Feldheim. Page 67 (Hebrew edition) says:

"After the taking one burns the "challah". It is permissible (muttar) to place the "challah" in the trash as well, provided one wraps it in a genteel fashion (derech ne'otah), within a bag or the like." No further source is provided.

Marion, I am just in shock. I would love the source.

I'll keep looking, but the book didn't provide one. Feldheim is reputable enough, however, that one must exist somewhere!

Checked the English version of the book (Bread, Fire and Water) and the wording is basically the same as Marion's translation. No reference to it in the sources at the back of the book.
And the English version of the book is translated by my kallah teacher, and so I know that there is a basis to the practice, though I also never thought of it (I somehow missed that when I learned through the book).
