Are the kids going to eat in the den? You can try to protect the carpets. I bought a few dollar store plastic table cloths that I use as "drop cloths" whenever I have kids that are going to eat somewhere that I want to keep clean. They are really large and you can just toss them after. For dd's birthday party which we just did in the house we layed one down on the floor in the basement (carpets) and served the cake there, the kids just sat on the floor. Then I rolled it all up and tossed it, including the paper plates etc.

Your plan sounds great and hopefully the weather will cooperate!

Oops - sorry, wasn't trying to imply anything other than saying not to worry about it all being totally traditional, that the fact you are all getting together is what's important.
Sara - I really wasn't trying to imply that you shouldn't have suggested fish - sorry! I was just trying to say to Barbie that it's OK to miss any particular food, even if you learn that it's customary or has significance. FWIW, we try to limit our red meat intake, and rarely have fish for various reasons.
Hope you have great weather!

No eating in the den.. it's just the only place they can physically be if it's raining outside. The den smells moldy again (ARGH!!!) And the stains are starting to come through (double ARGH bc I just spent $169 to get rid of them!!) SOOOOOO.... they were nice for 10 hours. Can't be in a stained room. SOOOO... my parents might come to the rescue and try and help me with this slight problem. We've never done carpeting before, but we may as well give it a try!

Can you do the chicken in the oven if the weather doesn't allow you to BBQ? My family likes chicken slathered in BBQ cooked in the oven, and it can sit longer than chicken freshly BBQed.

It sounds like a nice gathering. If you were ever going to add an extra family, you could think about a soup course, but I don't know if everyone could fit more people in. [I find that the soup actually makes it cheaper, since it acts as an appetite suppressant and people eat much less of the more expensive chicken. I can get away with 1 roast chicken thigh per person, because nobody is hungry.]

I think winter time we'll add soup, as we all enjoying making it/eating it. We actually have a large circle of friends (B'H!!) and we divide the group in half bc otherwise we are talking minimum another 9 kids and 8 adults.

My dh will BBQ under an umbrella.

Challah purchased
Chicken marinating
Hawaiian style veggies skewered

Salad, potatoes and dessert being brought (and wine!)

Still need to make iced tea, as my only other choice is water. Need to set tables, and wash outside table even though we won't be using it. Can't stand dirty table and company over!!

Went well. It rained like it's never rained before and my husband had to BBQ in the downfall. We had to eat inside.... The carpet was done, but it was hard keeping 10 kids in one little room. 3 had melt downs and left early.. one ended up sleeping over.

Food was delish... we BBQ'd tons of chicken and skewered zucc/pepper/onion/pineapple all in teriyaki sauce (chicken was done in teriyaki too). Friends brought salad, garlic potatoes, and rice pilaf. Challah and wine for all, kids had grape juice. Dessert was cake and icies. It was fun.. next time I host I want to be able to eat outside, but I think we don't go again til Oct. Weather is iffy, but can't be worse than it was Fri night!

Sounds yummy and fun! Except maybe the meltdowns - but if they weren't your kids, also not so terrible.

sounds like it went really well, all considered! good for you!

the community shabbos meals i talked about, are in the community center. there is a kitchen there as well.

now, over the summer, dh and the rabbi want to bbq once a month before shabbos starts, so to at least have minyan once a month on shabbos eve.... not sure it will work, as most people do go away during the summer.

we bbq most of friday afternoons now, no one can eat a full shabbos meal at 10pm! so, after dinner, dh goes to shul, and when he comes back, we make kidush and have a little bit of fish or something else and that's it.

npl, i really liked what you wrote re embarrasing people etc - well put, and it's one of the beautiful things we learn!

Friday dinners are typically weird for us, as my dh works in the city 4 days, but from a local office Fridays. Summer time, since it gets darker late, he can also work from the city Fri and get home before Shabbos. If he works local, we can make a nice dinner or BBQ and make it to shul. If he works from the city, we eat and run. Sometimes we'll have dinner here instead, if it was a hectic week and not go to shul, but then it doesn't feel like shabbos to us.

The next dinner will be at a friends house that has a pool, so it'll be a shabbat pool party. It'll be fun... it's around the block from the shul, and the backyards are separated by one house, so the men can go to shul while the kids play, and then they can rejoin us.

the skewered chicken is a great way to make a little chicken go a long way - i did that with salmon for shavuos! sounds like a lovely idea!

I love skewered meals. We only did the veggies that way, and made chicken breasts regular on the grill. I knew I'd have a lot of picky eaters there and didn't want to deal with picking them apart. When the chicken was done, I put it into a large container, took the veggies, and took them off the skewers. Everyone was happy. For us, I prefer skewers.... I just find them fun!
