I no longer buy cut up chicken. It's over 14NIS/kg...since I usually do the chicken in the crockpot it literally falls apart anyway; why should I pay for it? (I do occasionally buy the back quarters - thighs/legs - for 9.70NIS/kg, also on special, but I prefer white so it makes more sense to buy the whole chicken.) The whole thing started as competition...one supermarket had "yom shuk" where you can get some staple veggies for 1NIS/kg on Tuesdays (usually carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, white cabbage, eggplant, and potatoes). And another had "meat day" (5kg of chicken for 70NIS...mix and match your parts/pieces). Then they all adopted yom shuk (Tuesday) and meat day (Wednesday). Then a new supermarket opened and the price wars started and they started offering insane prices on vegetables (49ag/kg for cucumbers/bananas/eggplant...) even on non-Tuesdays and the chicken prices as mentioned above on non-Wednesdays. The supermarket I shop at has continued this practice though the others have pretty much gone back to Tuesday and Wednesday (they can't compete anyway with a lot of the prices, but they are much more accessible). So pretty much the only time I can't get chicken at those prices is motzaei Shabbat (the meat counter is closed) or if they've run out... |

Yup - I love Rami Levi - you can often get whole chickens for 2-2.50 NIS/KG When could I ever hope to get a whole chicken (Mehadrin) for £1 in London ???? |

Wow! Our whole chickens are sometimes more expensive than cut (they are right now!) and sometimes less, and often the same. I buy a whole chicken if I'm making it in time for Fri night meal, and we love it with potatoes cooked around. But, when I'm cooking in advance, and want to put 4 trays of chicken in the oven at once, to freeze and reheat, then I prefer the cut chickens cooked in sauce. Also, I find it's easier to defrost the raw cut chickens than the raw whole, so if I'm buying for the freezer, it's the cut-up ones (or the boneless skinless for special occasions like the first day of yom tov, because of the garbage issue). I also "cheat" when we are having guests, and buy the smaller chickens, as people take "a piece" and then fill up on sides. The smaller chickens reduce wastage when people decide they took a piece that was too big! Jo - I checked the prices carefully in London this summer - the same in sterling as Cdn dollars, which is an average of 8-10 per chicken. |

npl, we also stocked up on those chickens. The sale is until rosh hashana. Frozen gefilte fish was just on sale too, so we bought a whole bunch. As for the garage...why can't you put it on manual? That's what we do for shabbos...with a padlock...otherwise we'd have to shlep our valco stroller up to the second level. |

Anyone else worried that the food they froze won't defrost in time? |
