What do you guys do about finding appropriate clothing for your bat-mitzva aged girls?

DD has outgrown our usual children's clothing stores both in size and maturity. But, even if I can find the right size in adult stores (ie size 2 or smaller, and not particularly curvy yet) it's often too mature. She would look strange in styles designed for a grown woman. Add the need for tznius fashions into that, and it's becoming very frustrating.

Mix-and-match casual styles aren't too hard to find, but shabbos clothing is really challenging us. She needs clothing to wear to her bat mitzva - shabbat in shul, motzei shabbat at home with her friends, and Sunday afternoon with family and adult friends.

What kinds of stores do you shop in for girls this age?

shabbos clothing I find hard even now with DD1 who is 9 but tiny, so about a size 5/6 because all the stuff is short and she is VERY thin, so going up sizes is not an option (not that they get much longer anyways as the sizes go up). I have tried the jewish stores here and I was so surprised- not only was the stuff short, meaning no real added inches over reg. stuff in the reg. stores, but everything is BLACK and NAVY! just really not my preference- I like color, especially for little kids...a friend with a DD who is 11 mentioned she try's Macy's and finds tops that her DD can put kiki rikki's under for sleeves/neck and just buys skirts in the jewish stores. I was very dissapointed this year, none of the stores (gymboree, childrens place etc...) had anything REALLY amazing, not for easter time and not now either :( and everything is SHORT this year- no longer party skirts/dresses.

I found the same thing with the frum stores - mostly black, and many styles were too short for dd to grow much. I don't like dd wearing black, especially not in tops, and not for a simcha!
I've had little luck finding matches between different stores recently, which is made harder by the proliferation of black. Between fabric and colour/tone, it's hard to make a nice match.

Honestly, my friend gave me some beautiful stuff from England the other day for Frei. Most of it is to big for now but she will grow into it. Very snious too!

Right now we buy a lot of landend dresses for Frei. She is in a size 7 now I think and is 5.

We have been using hand-me-downs from her English cousins for years. Unfortunately, she's in the biggest size and there isn't any more coming!
I always take her shopping when we visit, but it's been harder and harder to find things recently. The styles are getting more and more "american"! And, we have the same sizing/styling issues there as we have here - almost too big for the kids sizes, and too mature for many of the kids styles, but not into the adult stuff yet.
I could look at Lands End, etc. But, with the issues of shipping, returns and guessing the sizes, it's not easy or cheap.

The shells at Aretz Originals come in smaller sizes. My girls also get their skirts there - but we like black.

I've had some luck recently with H&M.

The juniors section of Winners sometimes has some nice tops.

If you are looking for something that's really beyond that, and a bit fancier, try Woodbridge. n.b.tween kidz in the shops around Vaughan Mills sometimes has decent items, esp. if you layer with a shrug. http://www.littleones.ca/Articles/nb-tween-kidz.html Zero20 Bambini, at Hwy 7 and Pine Valley, has long formal dresses for girls that can be made tznius with a wrap or shrug.

Old Navy used to have good round-neck tees that could go under something. But you sew...hit up Fabricland, have her choose a couple of patterns, and custom-make her something. You can lengthen as necessary.

(I'm thinking along the lines of a princess-line jumper, which could be worn either with a tee under it or with a jacket over it. You could also stitch a pretty sash to go around her waist to dress it up, or get one of the silk flowers and add a safety pin to the back, which can then be worn as a "brooch" to dress it up as well. Or a "plain" princess line dress, without the jumper, which you can accessorize in a similar fashion. Let her pick the patterns and the fabric, Mom & DD#1 date.)

i don't remember where you live (sorry). here also it's very difficult, most clothes are too mature or too dark. i was recently in israel for 6 days, and couldn'tfind any day to day clothing in bnei barak, only for yom tov or simche which i didn't need.
i found a few things in jerusalem, and in the azrieli canyon.
my daughters sometimes receive clothes from their cousin, who's not frum, so lots of short sleeves. the girls then wear it over long sleeves, which looks very nice. same goes with short sleeves dresses.

JRK - we went to Zero-2o Bambini and they are having a huge sale, but we didn't find anything appropriate, and there was hardly anything in the non-sale section. We don't need very formal, just smart shabbos.
No Ann Taylor Loft here, but if anyone else knows of stores in Canada that have tiny sizes, that would be great!
We'll go to H&M again. She does have a lovely tunic top that she wears with a shell and black skirt, which we bought there. The skirts seem to fit a bit funny, but if we find a less fitted style we might be OK.
Marion - I haven't sewn in ages, and haven't had much practice with clothing. I'm considering it, but it's hard to find time to sew without the toddler awake but with me still awake enough to concentrate. I probably even have fabric, and could use the same pattern for two dresses in different fabrics. If I could find the time!
UTMJ - thanks for the look at Junees. We have a store that sells Junees here, so I could take her to at least figure out sizes, even if they don't have something suitable in stock. I could order and find somewhere to have it delivered in the US for when dh goes in a couple of weeks.

Laura Petites? (I'm sure I was wearing their stuff by the time I was a teenager.) I think there's one in the Promenade.

If you don't want to sew yourself, maybe consider having a seamstress do it. Not sure it's the cheapest option but it will definitely be what you (and she) want.

I remember that in-between stage being really hard... Adult stuff is too mature and kids stuff is too babyish! And it's so frustrating in Toronto when stores don't have cOmplete websites... I saw petite young teens from my shul wearing dresses from mexx that looked cute!

Marion - Laura got to be a bit frumpy recently and very expensive. I haven't even found stuff for me in the last year (except the suit I bought for dbs wedding that they still have in different colours!). Also, the sizes don't go small enough.
Mexx is a good idea - I haven't shopped in the adult section, but could easily have a look next time I'm at the mall.
