Too bad about the Loft, I got all my girls shabbos stuff there for years and still get stuff there, they often have 40% off so it comes out reasonable. |

I had a >2hr wait for an oil change today, so I hit the thrift store and the consignment store. I found a size 2 plain navy velvet jumper dress that's in pretty good shape. I could use that as a basis for Marion's idea, with a sash or other embellishments. It is so simple and plain that I don't think there is anything about it that dd won't like, as long as it fits well enough (not too tight). I think she'll like being able to design how to change it. I also spotted a very dressy outfit at the consignment store that's a dress and jacket. It'll need a shell, and the jacket sleeves may not be long enough, but it probably will fit. It was a real find, as they don't usually have anything in a size 12, and I wasn't even looking for dd1 (just dd2), but it was hanging on display at the end of a row, and caught my eye. It is very formal, more so than she needs, but I she'd like to be super-dressed up for her melaveh malkah (with her classmates), so for less than $20, I think that's a good boost for her. Davening that it fits and she likes it! Our back-up plan for the Sunday is for her to wear her bridesmaid dress from my sister's wedding, which is not too formal, but may not still fit by then. And we have a dress of mine that she has worn once before, that she might have to wear instead. Wish I could send dh shopping for us in Boston when he goes, but it's too hard to figure out sizing, especially as it's so dependant on style and cut! |

B"H - the fancy dress and jacket fit (just) and she absolutely loves it! We put her fancy cream shell underneath and it looks very flattering on her. Just hope she doesn't grow too much in the next 6 weeks (which isn't a joke, as she is growing pretty fast at the moment!). But, I found the dress at the consignment store and paid less than $7 for it, so it's worth the risk. I will probably get her a new shell, though. The other dress, which we were going to alter, is too tight in the waist - I guess that's the difference between a preteen and adult figure. But, she did like the idea, so I can keep looking for something like it, and it should be easy enough to find a pattern and sew a copy myself. |

Value Village? I completely understand about that in between stage. I was there for MANY years. My feet, for example, are a size 5. So I'm just a tad too big for children's shoes and adult sizes are a bit big. I prefer to wear size 6 shoes because I'd rather the shoe be a bit big than small. My body has postpartum weight (still...) so I don't really have that concern with sizing anymore - I'm just short. |

Conundrum - that's where I bought the dress that doesn't work, but I'll keep looking there. I think a less-fitted style in that size would work for her. Fortunately, dd loves the challenge of combing through the racks and spotting the bargains! DD has bigger feet than you (and me) and finds shoes in kids and adults sizes. Then again, finding adult-style shoes in the kids department can be a challenge, even though you save money on the taxes! Before kids, I was a 6.5 US, and could buy shoes in either department. I often preferred the styles in the kids section, because they were more comfortable. Otherwise, I found a better selection at places like Winners, where they are selling off the sizes that didn't sell at the regular stores. Get you on the post-partum size thing. I'm technically too short for most stores petite range, although I sometimes opt for regular sizes in skirts for the extra length. As for buying kids clothing, which should fit length-wise, if I'm the same height as dd (ok, I'm still about a half inch taller!) - I'm way too curvy to dream of getting into kids clothing and have been for years! |

npl, I do that too! When I was suit shopping I bought a regular sized skirt (for extra length) and a petite top. It worked out well. I think you are taller than me...I'm not even five feet. I still fit into some kids clothing. The truth is that some of my old outfits are actually larger than supposedly adult clothing. I'm actually wearing my grade 8 graduation shirt as pjs right now. It's big and comfy. Sizing is really subjective - it varies in each and every store. Disclaimer: After two babies, about 99% of my old wardrobe doesn't fit me :) Edited by conundrum1, Nov 15 2011, 10:19 PM.

Another shorty here. I'm too short for petite stores, so I don't buy anything without assuming the cost of alterations on top of the purchase. Shoes are a miserable story. I wear a woman's 3.5, which equates to a child's 1.5. There is one store in the country that sells that size and they are located on the other coast. I order all my shoes on line from them, or ebay if I can find a shoe from that same company that is in good shape (but someone else most likely wore!!) I finally filled out, but before I had kids I wore kids size 8-10! My daughter is now entering that size for tops, but bottoms she's a 6. I saved some of my 8 (child!) prepregnancy stuff for her. How pathetic!!! |

Not pathetic, HAM - I wore my mother's shoes and some of her clothes, when she grew with pregnancy. I've done the same for dd - she wore my snow boots last year, and is now starting to wear some of my very small clothes. Shoes I can no longer hand down to her - her feet are just about bigger than mine, although she's wearing some of my old flats. Clothing is an issue because I have been very curvy since my mid-teens, but she will probably be much taller than me, and bigger built, so I doubt that by the time she fills out the curves the clothes will fit in height. We'll see, but the nice stuff that I hung onto in the hopes of getting very skinny again is slowly being donated to the cause of "clothing the preteen"! |

We finally found something for her to wear for shabbos from the ladies section of a basement frum store. B"H for the sale, so we got a reasonable price. It was a bit of hit-and-miss because she didn't fill some styles in the right places, iykwim! But, in the end, she put together a chiffon-y bubble-style skirt with a wide elastic waistband in black, with a slate grey shell with bubble cuffs. She'll wear it with a big necklace. It's simple but age appropriate, and much more her style than most other things. For motzei shabbos with her friends, she'll wear the dress and jacket from the consignment store, which might not fit her for long after (hope it will still fit in 3 weeks!) but for the price, I don't care - I'll put it away for dd2! And on the Sunday, she'll probably wear a dress of mine, although she might still be able to squeeze into her bridesmaid dress. My dress is a chiffon day dress in a dark red with print that she wears with a black shell underneath. It's very forgiving because it's so soft and has a drawstring back. So pleased that it's all essentially sorted out - with 3 weeks to go, I really need to focus on the other logistics, like food and decor and plates, etc. |

Wow! 40% off is a fine deal. I have been buying Carbon 38 workout clothes for a very long time now. they have an amazing collection of clothes and shoes. They also put discounts sometimes. You must also check this one out, I am sure you will love it. |
