Choosing a nursery/playgroup

I'm thinking of putting my 2yo into a playgroup or nursery school in September for half-days (she'll be almost 2.5yo). Whilst I'd love to keep her home full-time, she's a busy, active kid and I'm realistic enough to know that I'm unlikely to be able to keep up with her needs all day with a newborn and with older kids who need me intensively in the evenings.
I know that I'm looking for a warm and nurturing environment, with smallish classes and a good staff-student ratio and with teachers who respect individuality over conformity and the value of watching the child's cues.

But I have no idea what to look for in practice to see if the programme will live up to my ideals!

Any suggestions on finding a great place for dd?

Ask around- shul, school, etc... I find the best source is people who have experienced the place first hand.

Already doing that to create my shortlist, but I find that not many people view preschool in the same way I do.

I hear ya. Maybe make a list of questions and interview the places. Ask if you can try it out for a morning.
