Did anyone see the Panorama program on Scientology last night? If anyone has an hour to spare it's well worth a look.

It got me thinking. When does a cult become an accepted religion? I suppose it's dependant on the ammount of followers. I think Richard Dawkins once said something along the lines of 'there's sanity in numbers', and I think he's right. If you surround yourself with enough people all repeating the same doctrines, it affirms those doctrines to the point you actually believe they're true. How else could someone believe in, for example and amongst other things, a billion+ year old alien warlord named Xenu who brought his followers to earth in a spaceship resembling a modern aicraft and who is currently imprisoned within a floating prism, thought to be in the Himalayas?

I suppose the sanity in numbers principle allows belief in just about anything anyone could ever think of.

Aww, it was just finishing when I put the tv on Shockhorror I flicked through the other channels to see if it was repeating, but no such look.

I'll defo look at that when I have an hour to spare. I've never got to the bottom of exactly what this religion is.
Thanks!

Indeed. I think it's just as likely as believing that one sentient entity is repsonsible creating the universe.

How many people believing in invisible pixies would it take for the idea not to be immediately dismissed?

I like invisible pixies and have several in my back garden. They like to eat cold sausage.

As far as a 'creator' is concerned? Why not? :D

I can't fault your impartiality Les. Presumably, Scientology's old Xenu chap holds equal weight in your belief system ??

About as much as invisible pixies, but not as much as a Creator. Probably. :D
