Yesterday I was standing in my kitchen when I heard a very peculiar noise. It sounded like a very big, very angry wasp that had got trapped somewhere. I tracked the sound down to the dog flap which is in the back door and realised that it was a combination of the angle of the flap and the speed and direction of the wind hitting it from outside. At that moment the dog, very unreasonably in the circumstances, decided to crash in through the flap to escape the rain. The noise immediately stopped - obviously. Since then, I've tried to get it to do it again, just out of curiosity and I can't.

Nothing paranormal about it, but it did occur to me that I'd never heard that sound before and I haven't been able to replicate it. I guess we're looking at Chaos Theory here. If even one thing in that set of circumstances is changed even minutely, then the whole effect doesn't happen.

Maybe that explains why paranormal phenomena is so hard to replicate. Chaos theory.

I'm sorry Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that

Funny how 'mediums' don't often have that problem.

A far more likely explanation is that the phenomena don't happen in the first place.

To your difficulty in replicating the sound - it is possible to replicate the sound, not impossible. I've yet to see the same level of confidence be given to supposed paranormal claims.

I know you weren't meaning my haunted dog flap Fells, but the point is that your comment could well apply here. If you refused to believe me, I'd have a hell of a time proving it to you.

A noisy flap is not an unusual or for that matter out of the ordinary experience. Nor does it require much assumption or suspension of the natural laws. For that reason we can accept your faulty flap at face value with reasonable confidence. The onus on you would only come if you stepped outside the natural laws and suggested an unconventional source for the noises haunting, goblins, elfs, unicorns etc.

I for one accept your story of the noisy flap and am happy it resolved itself with a little Doggy intervention. :D

The same effect is at play as when someone farts, or a trumpet sounds, or a grass reed is blown between pressed thumbs. Simple resonance. It is re-creatable, even if you find it difficult.

But for the dirty minds in here, I would say that I could make your flap resonate.

Now that would be an interesting academic exercise. Scientific method, I assume.

I would be relying heavily on the peer review process!

Obviously. Otherwise we're getting into extraordinary claims territory.
