Does anyone else attempt speed runs or alternate challenges for games? I'm currently working on a speed run, a low level no materia challenge, and a single character challenge for final fantasy vii. Anybody else do any alternate challenges? |

People are unsure as to what to do about a speed run for FFVII. Speed Demo's Archive only accept speed runs no longer than 5 hours in length, and FFVII at the FASTEST POSSIBLE TIME, is somethin like 8 hours, or around that. They're wishing that SDA accepts speed runs of JUST escaping out of Midgar, which are around 1:15-1:30 (hour) in times, but according to their speed run rules, the runs have to be of the COMPLETE GAME!! So thus is the reason why there are still no speed runs released for FFVII at this time, but hopefully someone will figure a way around this...all I can say, is if your gonna record your speed run, to do it in segments of maybe an hour or less each (save, stop tape, then when you start again, start tape at save screen, load save, continue) ....my personal best escaping out of Midgar is 1:45.

I did a couple of single-character challenges in FFVI, but I haven't really done any extra challenges since then, aside from playing FFIX really fast so I could get the Excalibur (that IS what you get, right? It's been a while). I was going to try and get 100% of the battle trophies in Star Ocean III, but after I found out what some of them were, I couldn't be bothered. (Seriously. 100 hours spent in battle? What kind of no-life loser does Square-Enix take me for? Who's going to spend 100 hours of gametime just bashing away at monsters? And the one where you have to spend 2 hours in a single battle...yeah, right. Bo-ring.) I do always try to buy as little as possible in stores, when playing RPGs. I only buy stuff that can't be found through other means, pretty much. |

Funny, that's almost like saying what low-life loser would spend countless hours collecting a million roses on WLK only to get a different loading screen and rose pedals all over the place.... :glare |

Not exactly--you can get a million roses in much, much less than 100 hours. Not to mention which, in order to get 100% of the battle trophies in SO3, you'd have to spend a hell of a lot longer than 100 hours on it. 100 hours in battle is just ONE trophy. There's also one for fighting more than 500 battles in a row without having your fury gauge broken or reset (which wouldn't be terribly difficult, if said gauge didn't reset every time you load from a saved game. This means you can't do 20 battles here, 50 there, and so forth. You actually have to sit there and fight 500 battles in a row. Even if you do it in the Vanguard ruins area, where it's extremely easy to avoid having your fury gauge broken, and most battles can be finished in a few seconds, it still takes a fair amount of time.) Then, there are trophies you can only get after you've beaten the game at least twice, trophies you can only get with certain characters in your team, and trophies that are just plain annoying to get, for one reason and another. And there are--man, I don't remember the exact number, but it's around 300 of them. Probably, if you didn't use a walkthrough, you would have to spend 300-500 hours figuring out what they all are, and then getting them. (And some of them are so bizarre/out there you might not figure 'em out, even then.) Plus, with the possible exception of the ones involving insane amounts of time spent in battle, you can't get them by leaving your PS2 on all night, or rubber-banding your controller. |
