Well, I was out of commission all day Sunday because of a migraine. It is really terrible stuff and I've only started getting them about 8 months ago, and they seem pretty rare and random. But what I was wondering is if any of you guys get them and what do you do to stop them or do you have any hints to make the pain less?

Oh, you poor thing! Migraines are awful. My brother gets them and he has pills that help. I'm not sure what the medication is called. He had to try different prescriptions before he found the one that works for him, but he has to take a pill the minute he feels one coming on because if he waits too long they don't work. I had what I think were a couple of migraines last month. I rarely get headaches except sometimes sinus headaches which I thought these were. My head hurt, my eyes hurt, my face hurt - it was miserable. I took some decongestants but they didn't help. Extra strength asperin only helped a little. I had really bad nausea and if I moved around the pain and the nausea only got worse. All I could do was lay down and wait for it to go away. I didn't feel better until the next day! If it happens again I'll go to the doctor and see what he says. Spending a whole day on the sofa when you don't want to sucks. From what I've read, migraines are different for everybody and what works for one person may not work on the next. Although they all seem to agree that laying down in a dark room helps. Apparently, too, migraines can be triggered by food or allergies or smells. Chocolate and caffeine set off some people. Certain perfumes give me intense headaches. If you keep keep track of when you get your migraines and what you were doing/eating even the weather at the time you might find a common thread. Hope this helps and that you're feeling better. |

Well, I've never had one, I've had pretty bad headaches, especially while sick. I would think exercise, particularly cardiovascular, would help what with improving your circulation. I don't know, but exercise never hurts... unless you get hurt exercising... If I remember correctly, even doctors don't quite know the exact cause of migraines, so it sounds like something fierce. |

I get headaches everyday, usually really bad ones, and when it gets really bad I'll take one of those memory-foam pillows that are incredibly comfortable and just lie face down on it on my bed. Or just on my side and close my eyes and try to sleep through it... |

Thanks for your advice guys. I think I'm going to write down the conditions and what I had that day and all of that next time I have one to see if it is a connection to anything. That's a really good idea. Exercise probably would help regardless if I had headaches or not. I'll admit that I'm not in tip-top shape, but I certainly do get about an hour of exercise in every day unless it's raining or bitter cold. But to be honest, I hope I never have one again to have to think about it. And very sorry to hear that some of you get them too, I certainly feel your pain. |

An hour a day is actually excellent... especially when you consider Americans these days... I probably only get about an hour a day as well, pretty much just maintanence since I've been unable to find time to keep up my standards. But I'm already in tip-top shape. |

I've had severe migraines since I turned 18, and they seem to be connected with my eyes. So, things that help me most are: a) a darkened, quiet room to lie down and try to get sleep with some general painkiller (I read somewhere that doctors were testing a new migraine remedy with 3 components: caffein, acetylsalicylic acid and paracetamol, so I've used a mix of 1 cup of real coffee, 1 Aspirin, 1 Panadol) b) while keeping my eyes shut, I try to open them as wide as possible (w/o opening the eyelids!), and then squeeze them shut as tight as possible, repeat. Also trying to look straight up while eyes are closed seems to help, sometimes. c) extremely hot showers where I let the water splash over my forehead while turning my head slowly so the water goes from temple to forehead to other temple and repeat. d) slowly pinching my forehead (all over, if you find a sweet spot, stay there for a while) and bridge of the nose with my fingertips (thumb-index-middle). Best thing is to recognize the symptoms before it really hits, and take a painkiller beforehand. |

Ahhh, migranes! Hate 'em! I don't get them very often, but I did get one last Thursday. It was the worst, it happened during a family dinner at Halas to compound the problem. I could barely eat anything that night, even though I skipped lunch and only had a piece of toast for breakfast that day. It just seemed like everytime someone talked, my head would throb in pain. It was very foolish of me, though, because I did have a small headache throughout the day and didn't take anything. I agree with Karppa about taking a warm shower; that really helped me feel better afterward. |
