I have been using a monitor whose colors don't work right for a long time. On my monitor this site's background color is an ugly dull pink. So I bought a monitor like someone had suggested I do a long time ago. I hooked up the monitor, and turned on my computer, and ... nothing. Do monitors usually require you to install software in order to get them to work, or are they plug-and-play-ish? It is very very possible that the whole problem is that I can't turn the power on on the monitor. It has a stick like I've never seen for an on/off switch, and no matter how much I press it, pull it, jiggle it, hold it in, or swear at it, nothing happens. If monitors are usually plug-and-play, and if nobody can help me turn that darn thing on, then I'll probably try buying another monitor very soon. Thanks if anybody can help. |

switch![]() as viewed from below ![]() The monitor has an AC cord, and I've tried monkeying with it so I think it's in correctly. The monitor actually does make an electronic-sounding click when you plug it in. I had it connected to the PC too. The monitor's base has additional ports, they look like USB, but I doubt that I would need more cords than the AC cord and the cord to the PC. So it's unusual that you can't just connect a new monitor and get it to work without new software? |

That is weird....I'm pretty sure all monitors are just plug and play. No directions came with it? |

Try plugging the ac cord into a different outlet. Sounds like you may have a faulty outlet. Or a popped breaker (check your breaker box). Turn the pc on. Then press the button switchy thing on the monitor. If the doesn't work... It may be possible that it could be a mac monitor? They don't work with pcs, I believe. Ps. Most monitors are plug and play. Also, unplug the power cord from the monitor, plug the power cord from your pc into the monitor and try to power it on. |

Aw, that sucks, slo bro. Sorry to hear you're having computer problems - they are the worst. I doubt it's an old style Mac monitor since you wouldn't have even been able to hook it to your PC if it were. The newer ones will work on both Mac and PC. If youve established that your cords work, as per Aaron, then make sure the cable from the PC to the monitor is good. Check to see that the connections are snug, too. After that, it's either the monitor has a problem or your video card has a problem. You could look up the monitor online - sometimes the manufacturer will post the manual plus have a troubleshooting FAQ. Good luck! |

Thanks much for the help, everybody. The strange thing is that no matter what I do with that power switch, there is no click - it doesn't seem like I've turned the monitor on at all. |

I think all monitors should have an on/off switch somewhere, have you checked all the sides? What's the model, we could search for the monitor's PDF manual? BTW, is it connected with a DVI-plug or a standard monitor plug? |

That thing I took a picture of has the circle with a vertical line symbol that seems to mean on/off switch, but I'll take a closer look for other switches. The monitor says Compaq P110. Sorry, I don't have a clue what a DVI-plug is. To be honest I haven't tried fiddling with the thing since midday yesterday. |

there's no customer service number to call? what about compaq's official site for web support? do you have the monitor driver installed? |

Just found the manual at http://www.datech.net.au/p110_guide.htm, but it doesn't reveal how the on/off switch is operated. Have you tried pressing it up instead of in? (http://ftp.compaq.com/pub/supportinformation/techpubs/ was of no help, there used to be a ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/supportinformati.../284986-002.pdf but it's no more there (I take it P110's product number is 284986-002)) |
