I don't know if Halloween changed all over America (or other countries), but damn, it's different than how it used to be when I was a kid in my neighborhood. When I was a kid we'd run around in big groups collecting candy for as many hours as we possibly could, forming little mobs of kids as we ran into people we knew as the night went on. The streets were just filled with children having fun, even teenagers. And we'd run from house to house and be all out of breath when we yelled trick or treat. My parents would have to buy bags and bags and BAGS of candy, and every year by this time we'd be running out and resorting to fruit snacks and granola bars. It isn't like that anymore. We've barely had any trick or treaters, most of who we had were people we know that don't even live in our neighborhood that brought their kids by. They are all tiny groups of 2 or 3. There are parents with them, even the older kids. Everything has changed here, and it made me so sad. Made me really miss the 80s. When I was a kid, no one was worried about their kids getting stolen or the candy being tampered with in our neighborhood. Things were just so different. And it makes me sad that times have already changed and a night that I loved so much (my favorite holiday) is different now and these kids won't get to experience what we did. I know times change. It's just sad to me some of things that do change. However, this girl that was my best friend from kindergarden to 8th grade came to my house tonight with her 3 year old son (he was a ninja turtle btw lol) and I haven't seen her in years and years. It was awesome, she was really happy to see me and said she'd missed me a lot (I'd missed her too) and I think we're gonna get together for lunch or something. So that was an awesome suprise. The girl that lived across the street when I was little and used to babysit me came by with her two little girls who were soooooo cute, a "Harry Potter" Witch (that's what she told me lol) and Sleeping Beauty. Oh god. And there was also a girl, maybe 12 years old dressed as Reeses Peanut Butter Cups, and that is a candy we were giving out. She picked one up and said, I kid you not, "You are what you eat, and I'm gonna eat myself." Hahaha, it cracked me up. At least we only had one kid show up without a costume. And he was all by himself so I kinda felt bad for him. So I let him take a ton of candy anyway lol. Happy Halloween, guys! I hope you all had good ones! |

halloween in england has always been pretty rubbish but i totally get what you are saying
everywhere is getting rougher and people are less friendly to each otheri remember when i was young we knew most of our neighbours and used to play football on the road, nowadays gangs of chavs wander the streets in large intimidating groups. i also remeber me and my friends didnt learn swearwords until year 4 of junior school, nowadays little toddlers swear at thier parents. i remember my mum made me a turtle shell, shes great with a sowing machine so it looked so awesome

OMG Stu, yes, I can't believe the mouths on some of these little kids. I wouldn't even say the word "crap" under I was in 5th grade! Now, on the other hand, I swear like a truck driver And I'm only 25. It must be crazy for my parents and their parents (when they were alive) how much things have changed from when they were kids. At least little kids still like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles!!!!

Yeah, tonight I got to dress up as a pirate and everytime kids went by I'd say things like "Aarg, shimber ye timbers" or "Aarg, walk ye plank" It was great. And towards the end if kids came up with big bags of candy I'd try and take their bag while saying "Arrg, surrender the booty." It was great fun. Anyways, I know what you mean with the trick or treaters. There was hardly any kids this year. There was only about 45ish kids that came around and we had a half of bowl of candy left. Last year, we ran out, and we bought the same amount of candy. It was a nice night too! Com'on kids! Oh well. Happy Halloween! |

What's really pathetic is the kids that come and don't even have costumes on, you open they door and they just open their bags, don't say trick or treat, don't say thanks. It's sad. |

We also had a lot of kids dressed up at "students" but I'd ask them Arrg, what are ye supposed to be? because it really is pathetic. There wasn't a lot, but quite a few compared to the total number of kids we had come around. |

So they were talking about the "sexy" halloween costumes on the Colbert Report tonight, there have been newspaper articles about it apparently. So I looked around on Google News... This girl and I should be friends: http://www.thesop.org/index.php?id=2702 And I'm just so proud of my gender that our 12th most popular costume was what it was this year. :rolleyes http://www.eastvalleytribune.com/index.php?sty=77946 Am I the only person that *still* thinks that's an odd choice for a halloween costume? I guess being that I went as zombie jesus I have no room to talk lol. |

LMAO Wax! The golden brains are a little hard on the rotting teeth, but once you get them down they're pretty satisfying. |

I agree with what you all were saying: Halloween has definately changed from when I was a kid, especially in the amount of people that actually go out and trick or treat. In the past, there used to be mobs of kids that would trick or treat; now, I only saw like one or two really large groups and maybe about ten smaller groups. It seems like most people don't even dress up in costumes anymore. The people who did show up in a costume were few and far between. It's sad, to me, dressing up in a costume was half the fun of it all. What's even worse are those kids that don't even walk while they're trick or treating--their parents drive them around to different houses in a car. I mean, seriously, what kind of lazy parent drives their kids around trick or treating? I don't know about you, but that would just kill the whole Halloween experience for me. I wish I had a Halloween party to go to last night. I would've definately dressed up in a scary costume rather than a sexy one, well, as scary as I could manage anyway. It's sad how so many girls use Halloween as an opportunity to dress up sexy. Come on, there are plenty of other times in the year to dress up like that; on Halloween, you're supposed to at least try to appear scary. |

Yeah, Halloween is so different now. When I was a kid no one, NO ONE went trick or treating with their parents. (Who was gonna man the door otherwise?) Maybe some of the older kids would go with the itty bitty kids to watch them, but that was it. We went out in mobs, too, and would circle back to the house to unload the loot and go out again. And you wouldn't even think to go out without a costume. No one would consider just a mask a costume. Nowadays, people drive their kids through neighborhoods trolling for candy - that is totally bizarre to me. Also, kids go to the mall to trick or treat. Unless it's Night of the Living Dead, there's not a whole lot scary about the mall. We should all consider ourselves lucky that we got to enjoy Halloween "back in the day" when it kicked ass. Now it's just, meh. |

I know what everyone is saying about how halloween has changed. We barely get any kids coming by, just mobs of high schoolers running around with eggs and shaving cream (I hate living near a high school.) The best was when two of the weirdest kids in my school came by my house trick or treating, and we gave them all the halloween candy we had, since there were so few people coming by. I had fun this year, as I actually went trick or treating with my friends (I know, I'm 17, but it was fun). I was a cat girl pirate, one of my friends was a mobster, another was a nurse, and the last one was a hippie. We got pizza afterwards too. |
