im doing project that targets 11-16 year old in which we need to create a shocking advert that triggers teenagers to think twice about behaiour at roadsides.
however due to limited resources etc we are not gonna be able to film someone getting run over so what else would scare the **** out of a teenager?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zc7SI_svpRg
fantastic ad

all the great ads on tv use special camera stuff like the one where the little girls comes back to life and slow motion crashing etc we cant do that
i have to do something like an illustrated animation rather than filming
what would shock you kids these days?

the base of he idea is "turn off your autopilot"
and we want them to believe "looking isnt always seeing"

it would also be great to see examples of road saftey ads from your respective countries

thanks guys

Eeek! That brought back a memory. I almost stepped into traffic in London once - not because I wasn't paying attention like those kids, but because I was looking the wrong way. Here the cars drive on the right so you look left to see on coming traffic closest to you and right to see the traffic on the further lane. There it's the other way around. Luckily someone grabbed my arm before I could step into the street. Whew.

As for your ad, I don't think you need massive special effects to be attention grabbing. Part of what makes the ad you like interesting is that you don't see it coming - like the kids, it's a shock to you because they don't telegraph the ending with dramatic music or serious voice over. What the kids are doing is so ordinary - goofing off, being silly - that when the accident happens the juxtaposition is more jarring. Careful editing can make a huge difference as well. You don't actually have to SEE the accident to remember it in your mind. Have you ever seen the original Mad Max? In the opening his family gets killed by a speeding truck (motorcyle? I can't recall) and you never see the accident. All you see is everything before and then baby shoes hit the pavement and it's pretty obvious what happened.

special effects are out of the question for me so im gonna have to do something shocking without filming which is really tough

ive talked to a few teenagers and they said the most shocking ting would be to see the kid in the advert knocked down and then it shows him as disabled while his friends are out enjoying themselves he is stuck in a wheel chair however
in the brief:
This brief covers a Department for Work and Pensions social issue.Wherever possible please consider appropriate representations of Disability.Negative images of disability as a consequence of a road accident should be avoided.
stupid PC :glare
i havent seen mad max is there a vid online?

wait... CAN it be video? If so, I have a great idea inspired by Coldplay's video for The Scientist.
(If you haven't seen it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EcKQneIxOJI )
Start out with a kid staring out a window in a neckbrace, pan out to show them in a wheel chair, then kinda zoom through it backwards to a few seconds before the accident and reverse again. (Watch the video, it'll make MUCH more sense.)

On a limited budget, you could do something along these lines:

Some guy is playing a car-racing game on a portable gaming thingy (you know, a PSP, or something.) He is standing by the road. You can hear cars going by, but the focus is on the game. Then, you hear the beep of the crossing machine (sorry--I don't know what you call that thing. You know the ones, though: they make a beeping noise, and a wee white man flashes, indicating that you can cross.)

Anyway, the gamer hears the beep, glances up at the flashing white man, and steps out into the road, returning his attention to the game as he does so. You hear a screech of tires and a thump. Then, you see the game broken in the street.

Basically, it would suggest that drivers don't always follow the rules, so it's important to look before crossing, even if the white man is flashing.

Maybe you dont have to break the psp, just zoom to the "game over" screen.

cheers guys,i have discussed with my group and we are gonna do an animation where it is from the point of view of the guy walking along and its all done in a fairground shooting gallery cut out style people pop up as hes walking along and distractions such as his phone and ipod pop up as well as statistics of road accidents which get shot down with that metal "ping" to symbolise him ignoring these warnings
he then sees his friend on the other side and rushes to get across.in the middle of the road he turns to see a car then him as a cut out style with a target.it then goes blank and you hear a loud bang.
my group wants to end it like that but i thought maybe to make the black screen fade away to reveal a coffin in place of his body
