Hey everyone, I'm part of a team at school to help redesign our parking lots to make them "greener." Well, we're at the stage now of talking to people who have installed green parking lots to see what troubles they had, how they did it, etc. Anyways, I just thought that since the katamari board is made up of people all across the US, and world, maybe one of you knew of a green parking lot around your area. The idea is is that we could come in contact with that person, they might know of more green parking lots and we will soon be able to talk to a variety of people. So I'm just throwing this out here. |

What's a green parking lot? I've never heard of them before. |

I hadn't heard of this before, so I was interested to hunt around online and learn about it. It's quite interesting. Sorry I can't contribute anything, but best wishes as you work on this project! |

I put green in quotation marks since I meant it as environmentally friendly parking lots. The reason that we're changing parking lots is because when people park their cars on them, they leak gas, oil, and also heavy metals (such as copper, iron, cadmium, etc). All of those things rest on top of the parking lot since parking lots are designed to not be porous. The problem is, when it rains, all of the pollutants that were resting on the parking lot run right in the the body of water next to it. Even if that body of water is a ditch, eventually that water will find its way to the main lakes and rivers. Well, heavy metals, oils, and other pollutants like that aren't good for the things living in the water and it is also not good for humans since we drink that water. So to stop the pollutant-filled rainwater from parking lots (which is called runoff) from going into the main bodies of water, we thought and read about a few ways we could change the parking lot. If water settles in the ground, the soil will stop a lot of the pollutants from going into the water. So, one option for a parking lot would be to have porous pavement. In other words, holes in the pavement for the water to seep down into the ground, instead of running off. Another idea is to build these special gardens called rain gardens. Rain gardens are gardens that should trap most of the runoff and the plants planted in them also may remove some of the heavy metals and other pollutants from the water. Also, gardens are generally pretty, and having a aesthetically pleasing area (even if it is a parking lot) is also important. So, that is basically what I meant by a green parking lot. Some "green" parking lots have already been built to stop runoff from going into the water. So we wanted to know how they built theirs and if they ran into any problems or if they have any suggestions for us before we build ours. If you have any questions what-so-ever, I would love to answer them. |

Oh, i see. that's an interesting concept. I'll have to look around the next time I'm out to see if anyone around here does that. |
