For those of you who don't know, AP stands for 'Advanced Placement.'
AP Programming is a very, shall I say, elite class.
There are 5 of us taking this course. It's quite fun, yet difficult none the less.

We are going to start designing our own seperate video games. Since a lot of programmers make they're game without insight into whether said game would be fun or not, I decided to get opinions about ideas on what the concept should look like beforehand.

I was thinking it could be something along the lines of either a physics based side scroller, or a bird-view rpg. The rpg would be a bit more difficult, but I'm leaning towards that idea. It would involve gold, leveling up, about 30 different monsters (most mmorpgs have this amount), and all those other miniscule variables.

The physics based side scroller would be something along the lines of utilizing a grappling hook. If you have ever played Umihara Kawase, you know what I'm talking about. It would mostly be shooting the grappling hook from platform to platform getting farther horizontally and vertically, with the ability to stand on the platforms if need be.

Both would have levels designed by me (they would not be random,) and both would have some type of score counter.

Ok so I've decided to do the physics based game.
The name of it is still being decided. Any suggestions?

I'm going to make it a lot like N. If you don't know what N is, type it into Google. It's your first result. Instead of being a ninja with godlike reflexes, you will be a person who uses a grappling hook. You can walk, but not nearly as fast as N. Your strong point however will be swinging. You can aim it with the mouse and it will go out a certain distance.

Let's say this distance is 10. Let's say I'm standing on a ledge and I want to go under the ledge behind it. I shoot it to the ground, where it sticks, let on the rope a little to 9, which I can do by pressing up (down to pull in.) I simply jump down and have the hook sticking to the ground whilst I am swinging under the ledge to get behind it. I hold left to get a bit of momentum started, then when I am far out I hold right, and at the peak of my speed I let go of the mouse and fall.

This all seems good, right? I feel though as if using a mouse to aim the hookshot might not be the best idea. I could just use the arrow keys and space, with shift to jump. The screen will not move, but rather have a similiar layout to N. Also, you are a pacifist. There will be enemies. They can kill you. Sounds fun, right? Please give me some suggestions heh.

And uh if someone is good at making sprites I would greatly appreciate the help. ^_^

The one you've chosen sounds more fun to me. The control scheme; I don't think it really fits in with the mouse. You could make it work with just the keyboard, as you've said.
I'm not great at making sprites, so I can't help you there. Sorry.
Keep us posted on the game; I'm interested.

Umihara Kawase- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vD--YpIqHeY
N^2: To the Nth Dimension- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZiBE9tkDtf4

My game will be a combination of those 2 games. I shall use either sprites from Michael Jackson: Moonwalker, or simple stick figures. Even though I severely detest using them, as it shows lazyness, I cannot think of a good spritesheet to use.

The game will be made up of 24x24 pixel boxes.

These took me a pathetic 2 hours to make. Any suggestions on improvements?

EDIT: I made a ladder sprite and a ladder/block sprite. Yay me!
