Yay, a new "What are you currently..." topic! ![]() Well, I read the 501-page novel Airborn by Kenneth Oppel in 5 days this past week, and I started reading the sequel, Skybreaker, yesterday. This one's 544 pages and I'm already half way through. Really good series. I'm looking forward to reading The Da Vinci Code and Angels and Demons sometime too. |

I'm actually glad you asked that question. Since the tragic loss of my favorite author, Robert Jordan, who was basically my only connection to the world of literature for the longest time, I've had nothing to read. Brandon Sanderson, named as the author to complete Jordan's Wheel of Time series, has been my main staple. I read through Elantris and started in on his Mistborn series while I've been out here in the desert. In an attempt to make sure the three Mistborn books last me my entire trip out here, I've only been reading them when I don't have access to any games or the internet (ie. when I'm doing laundry and waiting two hours in a tent thrumming with machine noise). I've actually managed to pace myself out, and should have a good portion of book three, The Hero of Ages, to read on my two day trip home in a week and half. More to the point, Sanderson shows a great deal of thought and consideration when building his worlds and magic systems. He doesn't treat anything as a discrete idea. He actually looks at how having power over metallic objects would affect not only the way people dress and architectural considerations, but how those apparently small changes over the course of a millenium would affect society and economics for the whole world. There's no shortcuts taken, and it's the type of comprehensive world I'd choose to build myself. And highlighting my shortcomings, he keeps such world-building practices secondary to the main story so well that you don't even realize the signifcance until it impacts the main characters, and you realize that idea has been there all along. That's something I can't do. I'm so wrapped up in my own small brilliances that I feel I must bring them to the forefront immediately. Most importantly, though, Sanderson has broken me from my "one author" mentality. Since Jr. High, there was only really one series I paid attention to (Wheel of Time) because I felt I wouldn't have time to sink my interests into any others. I never wanted to take the energy to follow so many different authors so I stuck with one. Sadly, I waited until after my favorite died to realize how much I was missing. |

That sounds like it's by Gary Paulsen. Am I right? To be honest, I really hated his books when I was younger. |

Nice try for a translation, but not quite... A man on Emmaius' road... would be the title. |

I've started reading Warbreaker, also by Brandon Sanderson. I don't have much to say about it yet, but the magic system based on color and life force is a little weird and trivial. I'm hoping my doubts will be broken as he always seems to have an ulterior motive to the magic systems he creates.

Haven't seen the movie, I tend to steer clear of movie adaptations of books that I like (with a few exceptions) They tend to be a terrible disappointment in general

I took My Sister's Keeper from my ... sister a little while ago, I still haven't finished it. Probably wouldn't have picked it up on my own if it wasn't just lying there and I was bored, I mean it's pretty good I guess. |

this topic should be in Cosmic Entertainment Center. i got my Marvel Zombies yesterday. wow. its great! if you like marvel characters AND zombies this book is amazing. if you only like one, you might not care as much. but seeing a zombie hulk eat magnetos leg, then later turn back to bruce banner and have magnetos leg bone bursting through his abdomen was priceless. crazy: ralph machio (karate kid) produced the book! schweet! i finished part one of five before falling to sleepzzzz....
