It's almost blasphemy for me to say I don't like a katamari game seeing as how i run this joint but I can't help shake the feeling that this could have been great if they just did new stuff.

People often complain that each version of katamari didn't add anything new. But if they had actually done all new stuff with the new modes, it might have faired better.

I played some of these levels over 4 years ago...it's not even like they were changed or anything to make this feel new. They're identical to what they were, give or take an item placement here or there.

Three new levels out of 30+ is just wrong and screams of "let's cash cow this and make it just because we can and people will buy it regardless." Hell I bought it twice. :rolleyes

But my first playthrough wasn't enjoyable and my second was painful. I found it boring the first time through and even worse the second time through. The lack of new content is just getting to me. Sure this is a katamari I might play more than BK but it is BK and bah.

I know I'm one of the few who feels disappointed by KF but I can't help but think how great it could have been with 30 new levels, at least 8 new cousins, new modes, online co-op, new music, new filters and so on and so forth.

Granted I'm still gonna play this but i'm just not gonna play it to death like I have in the past, mostly because I already played this game to death three times in three different years...

(added a poll for those that want to give an opinion but remain anonymous, lol)

Speaking as someone who hasn't gotten to play a new Katamari since WLK, I think it's okay. Of course, part of it is that the BK levels are completely new to me, and I really loved WLK, so I don't mind replaying most of those levels. (There are definitely a couple that personally feel out of place for a 'Greatest Hits' collection).

They definitely could have done better, but for a 'Greatest Hits', it's alright. They could have mixed things up a lot more, adding lots of new items and layouts and such (I won't rehash my struggles with the 'barren' KD levels here).

Main thing is, though -- and I'm knocking on wood as we speak -- is this doesn't feel like a finale. This can't be the last Katamari game (not counting that Online one); it simply isn't good enough for that. In terms of a climax, it's a whimper, not a bang. Which is why I simply refuse to believe this could be the finale. It's more like... I guess you could say a test run? Giving the new hardware a spin?

The next game -- I'm convinced there WILL be a next -- has to be awesome. This? This is just a refresher. Something to tide fans over.

had i not played bk, i probably would fell differently.

if they added in mmk, i would not have complained (even though i played it, psp controls bah humbug).

even a classic soundtrack would have made me happy.

i really hope we get a new game and i really hope it doesn't rely on any of the systems motion craptrollers.

I enjoyed it a lot more than BK but I missed the cool little online lobbies, I had a bunch of fun giving random people cookies and running about harrassing the animals or playing soccer..

I understand that they didn't want to waste their time on an online component that nobody is really going to play but it would have been nice if they gave you a play area like that instead of just the boring storybook stuff...

theres nothing like the people talking to you in WLK which is a little disappointing also

i do like the story book interface but i miss being able to drag all the cousins into one pile and the beat the crap out of all of them. :heh

You can still call them in closer by singing and frolicking around, but it seems like they don't let all the Cousins roam free anymore. You have to use the balloon pages to switch reliably. (And you can knock them right off the edge, something I learned entirely by accident while trying to switch to the poor Prince once. That book needs guardrails.)

I wish there was some way to adjust the screen ratio, but that's a problem all the PS3 games seem to have. (Current gaming TV is old-old-old, and while the screen's a decent size, reading some of the profiles is tougher than it should be.)

I agree, the field selection screen in WLK was awesome. MMK still has my favorite level select, Prince Island, but something about gathering all 30-something cousins (back then) and plowing through them was awesome. And you only had to walk into the background to view your records. And you didn't have to go through menus to get to the presents and item collections and movies and songs.

One thing I will say about this one is that it is the funniest Katamari, the RoboKing and those short little cutscenes had me laughing the entire way through.

if we had at least 10 new levels, i'd be happier.

i don't want a rehash to be the last in the series. :/

If they added MMK and had new levels, I would be satified. This game is just meh for me.

I never played BK or KD so I'm not unhappy with the game as so much of it is new to me. I really like the brand new levels though like sprinkler & dream levels and so more of those innovative type of levels would have made the game better. I love the different modes but couldn't care less about the filters. I am decidedly unimpressed with the remixed music though. The budget may not have run to 30+ new levels but even 10-15 would have been awesome. Overall it is quite fun but...it feels like there is something missing.

I just stated playing it (up to make a star 10) and I feel empty. If they just threw in a little MMK (even if it's just the chameleon quiz and rocket gorilla levels), a actual cosmos mode (I loved in MMK and WLK where you fly around and see what you actually made with the stuff you build), and a few more original levels I would feel more full.

Out of all the Katamari games, this one is tied for second place in my favorites list with WLK. Seeing the old levels in beautiful HD with very little slowdown and no in-level loading times is a big improvement for me. Jumping just adds the icing to the cake.

It would have made first if it didn't include the extremely-barren KD levels, or if it included more than just a paltry sum of new levels, but alas, we cant have everything. The way I see it, it's a tribute game (as the Japanese name suggests) instead of a brand new game. And it pulls it off quite well.

I've actually played both and I am having a blast! I love that I can now play WLK levels with the points system. (I think this may be my favorite Katamari but not sure :o)

By the way Vix, while we have a topic on why you dislike a Katamari game I would like to ask a few questions:

1. Why did you dislike BK again? I wasn't active much around the time "BK Chat" was up so I didn't get to see.

2. Well, now you have disliked 2 Katamari games in a row, I was just wondering if you had mingling thoughts of giving up on the series. Kind of like how Survival Horror fans stopped playing RE after it turned action.

Thanks in advance. :china

for starters, just to be clear, the console bk was on wasn't my problem. i think in the long run, the half assed online system, the dlc fiasco and the lack of it feeling like katamari...those were the big ones that made me dislike the game. you're probably thinking that isn't good enough. but the fact that quite possibly the best levels in bk (to me) were "dlc" that was already on the disc and you needed to pay an extra $20 to get the key to unlock them was absurd.

the online mode felt so tacked on like, "we can do it but lets just do it for the sake of doing it." although the lobby was amazing, the online part not so much.

and bk just didn't have that katamari feel. there was something missing.

as for kf, the main reason i don't like it is i've played it three times to death already. four if you count the import. sure it's nice to have a katamari on the system i can keep hooked up at all times but i've played those levels countless times that i just can't get into it.

if they release a game that's NEW and doesn't use motion craptrollers, i'll be all over it. because honestly, it felt like they wanted to do more with this but were told to keep it in check. the new features are a start and the three new levels show they have creativity level to make levels that aren't just roll up X size in X minutes.

i enjoyed bk, but not as much as others in the series.

i enjoyed kf but after i got around to the third or fourth play of each level, i felt so painfully bored with it. i literally fell asleep playing it one night. :(

I think my only problem with BK was how pretty much every level took place in the same world. As in, more half the levels had you rolling around in the same location at one point. I honestly didn't mind the whole DLC fiasco. One thing I have to ask, did they do it that way in Japan? Maybe they had released the DLC there after release date as actual DLC and just though putting it on the disk and having you buy a key would be easier. If they did do it the same way in Japan I could see someone disliking it, but if what I proposed was the situation I would say they just found an easier way to do things. As for not feeling like Katamari, the only thing I wished they kept in recent Katamaris is the High King. I liked how he was a character in the cutscenes of WLK and then you could roll him up in MMK, but then after that he just kind of disappeared. :(

And while I do agree about a lot of the DLC being awesome, I loved some of the BK levels. The one that comes to mind is the Uranus one, that was an awesome level. :)

Onto KF...why mention motion controls? The statement kind of implies that motion is forced, when the one command that you do with it has a alternate button on the controller.

So, do you dislike BK or KF more? >.>

as far as i know, it was the same in japan as well.

---

i didn't mean motion like that. i have never even tried to use the six axis in KF yet, i've always used the button.

i mean using something like natal, or the ps3 wand thingamajig or the wii.

i don't want to be forced to play my games like that. i meant that if another game comes out and it's motion based only, like with natal then i'll probably have to pass on it.

---

i don't think i really dislike either more...each one has very specific reasons as to why i dislike it and they're very different reasons. but if i had to choose, i would say kf is slightly in favor over bk only because i have the option to play it more. i can't keep my 360 hooked up all the time which sucks because i would probably play it more if i could.

Oh, then I see how some would dislike it. (Though I didn't really care)

About Natal and PS3 thing, they are pretty horrible ideas to begin with. I don't mind Wii much, though the only time motion controls have really shined is WarioWare: Smooth Moves(awesome series, if you haven't tried it, do it)

i am not a big fan when it comes to any motion controls. as far as the ps3 goes, i've only really run across one game that it's been done so well in that you don't even realize it and that's flower.

i have a wii, i do enjoy wario ware i will say. but all the other games i have for it, they're just so meh and i get so bored so quickly with them.

When I first heard about this game, although I was excited, I thought the exact same thing. Beautiful Katamari got several reviews saying it was bad because it wasn't adding anything new, and this game was basically just screaming "Same thing", but made it sound nice by adding "Tribute" onto the end of it. -_-

I wish I could Prince Jump in the other games though. That would really help me in WLK... :mad
