Censorship in Katamari Forever?; This piqued my curiousity.

Welcome Mat
Looking at some of the items, I was wondering why Namco went through the trouble of censoring them. I'm referring to the alcoholic drinks in particular.

For example, ice-cold drink is clearly a glass mug filled with beer.

The "red grape juice" is clearly wine.

Since some of you have the Japanese version of this game, I was wondering if you could post the names all the potent potable items to see if they're different. I can translate the Japanese names to see what they say.

I think the censorship is just kind of dumb.

Stupid BAMCO. :rolleyes

Well, you could also explain it as the King not telling the Prince and his impressionable Cousins exactly what they are. Remember, 'in-universe' he's the one who describes everything for them and lets them know what's-what. So it would make sense that he's not all "That's a beer, We use it to get plastered. Don't let Our royal sweetheart know." :P

to get a Rated E is why.

alcohol reference gets a rated T for Teen, and use of alcohol gets a Rated M for Mature.

I found a Japanese page that lists the entire item collection for Katamari Forever (or in this case 塊魂TRIBUTE): :)

http://www12.atwiki.jp/katamaritribute/pages/32.html

Here are the translations:

Expensive Bottle = Whisky Bottle (ウイスキーボトル)

Grape Juice = Wine Bottle (ワインボトル)

Sparkling Bottle = Bottle champagne (シャンパンボトル)

Pineapple Drink = Pineapple Flavor (Don't know if this is juice or wine, but it is served in a cocktail glass) (パインフレーバー)

Soda Drink = Flavored Soda (correct translation here) (ソーダフレーバー)

Melon Drink = Melon Flavor (メロンフレーバー)

Red Grape Juice = Grape Flavor (guessing that this is red wine) (ブドウフレーバー)

Ice-Cold Drink = Kodomobiru (biru is Japanese for "beer") (コドモビール)

Glass Bottle = Beer Bottle (ビールビン)

So there you go. BAMCO censoring all the alcoholic beverages.

The funny thing is that the rating is still E, yet on the back it mentions "Alcohol and Tobacco Reference"

Why would they say this if all the references were removed? :lol

Why would they say this if all the references were removed? :lol
Because, as you've just noted, people aren't going to miss the reference just because it isn't spelled out. A little kid might not notice, but the older audience is going to pick up on just what those 'frothy mugs of water' really are.

If they were seriously censoring the game, they'd just dummy the items out or replace them completely. Laugh all you want, but Namco's not acting as bad as they could to preserve that 'precious E-rating'.

Oh, and I think the 'Flavored Soda' is just 'Soda Flavor', 'Melon Flavor', etc. -- noting what the drink tastes like. Doesn't mean it's alchololic; it's just like grape or strawberry soda. :shrug

Keeper of the Katamari

when i was doing the item list, a lot of items bugged me that weren't just related to this.

they changed names of even simple stuff.

like king kong became ape or something like that.

a tall business man turning into something like man in suit or something stupid like that.

to me, it's just another way they half assed this entry. and i'm still really hoping that this wasn't the end. :/

way too silly :S

In KF MAS11 today I finally managed to dash up the ramp into New York and grab ... Ape King :lol

Those uncensored item names are very cool. I especially like the Whisky Bottle; I would have never guessed that item was an alcoholic beverage.

This censorship doesn't bother me personally.

edit: What's "Wobbly Man" called in the Japanese version?

All I'm getting for Wobbly Man is Chidoriashi (チドリアシ).

If you want the link to the entire item list, it can be found here (the one before was just to the drinks):

http://www12.atwiki.jp/katamaritribute/pages/18.html#id_0c347047

I use google translator to translate the Japanese characters.

There's probably a few other translations that are way off, but there's the link, if anyone's curious about a particular item.
