Queen Latifah: I was sexually abused 10 Jun 2009 Rapper-turned-actress Queen Latifah has for the first time revealed that she was a victim of sexual abuse as a child. The beauty said that a teenage babysitter preyed upon her, adding that the incident left her unable to form relationships as an adult, reports The Sun. Latifah, 39, told Essence magazine: "He violated me. "I never told anybody. I just buried it as deeply as I could and kept people at an arms length. I never really let a person get too close to me. "I could have been married years ago, but I had a commitment issue." The 39-year-old's work in music, film and television has earned her a Golden Globe award, two Screen Actors Guild Awards, two Image Awards, a Grammy Award, six additional Grammy nominations, an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. |

it’s unfair that a shitty childhood / violence / shocks can stick to us human beings like a heavy rucksack even decades after. Why can’t a brain work like a rewritable hard drive? |

Are we sure the Queen is really gay? If she can talk about sexual abuse in her childhood why not about being gay or not? |

Because (unfortunately) sexual abuse is one of the favourite subjects of today’s media world. Being lesbian not that much. Therefore it might be easier to admit sexual abuse. |

People will say that this is why she "became" a lesbian. As usual. |

Cynical me thinks she's laying the ground work for coming out. Virtually every high-profile lesbian who has come out, immediately or not soon after, brings a book out saying they were sexually abused. I think publicists see it as a way to dampen the homophobic ignorants. Just you watch...she'll be out soon. (Rosie O'Donnell did a similar trick when she came out...she made it about the injustice of the adoption system for gay couples). |

I agree. This is the ground work for the lesbian side. Sick and tired of these lesbian stars coming out only after they announced they have been sexually abused. Isn't there any lesbian star out there who hasn't been abused? |

I'm so sorry this happened to her. It happened to most of the women in my life. The not being able to be committed thing has to be a slap in the face to her girlfriend though, Jodie said something similar a few years ago. I'm like, "wow". I feel for Queen Latifah, but I don't know how someone can be with someone like that. Does anyone else remember the Foster quote I'm thinking of? |

Neither do I, since Jodie doesn't really talk "private" stuff. At least I don't remember anything similar. |

^^ Yes, she did. Not about abuse, about commitment or being really focused on herself (and unable to form relationships). It was to a magazine. |

http://justjared.buzznet.com/2008/03/12/jodie-foster-love/ It was a part of her, "I haven't fallen in love", she's too "analytical" for it tour of 2008. I'd imagine her partner (then) would've been insulted, much like "Oh, I'd be married now (to a man), if not for..." ala the Queen. Back on the topic though, I don't want to deflect from the subject that was originally introduced. |

Ah, that one about "she hasn't fallen in love yet" phrase in Parade magazine.... I think it has been established on several forums/boards that the whole question/answer thing was out of context and she probably didn't mean it like that. |

I think all of you are confusing two different quotes. One the original *I think* this poster, who asked, was referring to was something along the lines that she could never fake a marriage or something like that. It was in response to the Kelly Mcgillis rumor. She basically said "kelly's married now....marriages are usually arranged based on what it can do for someones career." and so on. It was her saying, she can't ask someone to be in a relationship while she had a fake marriage. Something like that. That whole "I've never fallen in love" was bullshit. She's already answer that question on Larry King saying Yes and clearly, if you read the article, it was either out of context or the guy was saying it - not her. Kinda like putting words in her mouth. Having said that, will the lesbian community open there arms and welcome Queen or not? She wasn't to kind to us in recent memory. |

Yes of course. I don't know about people individually, but the major orgs and sites will. It's usually the case that whatever was said in the past is left in the past. I think most lesbians (and straights) can understand if she were to say well I said those things because I was scared etc. |

Even though she was against us in the biggest fight right now, Gay Marriage? It's one thing to say nothing and it's another to come out of her way to say that gay marriage isn't right. It's a hard one. |

There is Ellen, molested by her stepdad Melissa Etheridge, by her sister Rosie, by unknown Anne Heche, by her dad I think (although she isn't a reference...) |

Everyone is talking about stars, who are lesbians, who seem to always mentioned that they are sexually abused, leading many to add 1+1. Get it? Its one of the fundies favorite reasons. 'There are lesbians because they were abused by men. They hate men so they turn into lesbos.' When majority of celebrities (lesbians) say this, it reinforces the stereotype. It doesn't help lesbian image in the media. It says we are 'damaged' in some way.How hard is that to understand? |

So it sounds like an excuse for being gay. |

I saw a therapist once who just couldn't believe I had never been sexually abused as a child. She SO wanted to have such an 'excuse' to explain (or explain away...) my sexuality. Thus, it really gets to me when straights try to equate homosexuality with childhood molestation. I hope Latifah isn't going to use this news as a bridge to "coming out"...It's a cop-out! |

Post #24, I agree... I didn't like Monster because it yet another portrayal of a 'damaged' lesbian. And to a lesser extent, The Hours with Nicole Kidman. Theron and Kidman both won Oscars for playing 'damaged' lesbians. Tammy Lynn Michaels can be added to the 'damaged list' too - she said she was abused/brought up badly by her mother. Rhona Cameron (British lesbian celeb) - alcohol problems, poor background. Find me a high-profile lesbian who doesn't have a publicised 'damage' story... I'm thinking KD Lang. |

What about Martina Navratilova? Any bad experiences with men? Otherwise it's rather difficult to find a "high-profile" one. |

That "Parade" magazine interview came out around February/March 2008 while she was promoting "Nim's Island". Later in March 2008 the break up has been annonced by the (gossip) press. I really doubt he knew anything. Why should he? |
