Appearance Details
Overall Appearance Description: - Varetine is about 4’3” tall. Similar to all other Terebori, she’s slender, and round faced. Her eyes are an orange-yellow, and her dark blue-black hair falls in light curls to her shoulders. Usually she keeps it up in a loose tie. Her lips are a lighter blue than the rest of her, and are most often than not curled into a smile.
As she was a murky blue child with brown thick stripes, she’s now bright blue with red splotchy stripes. The most prominent of which are the two on her face. One is passing over her nose ending right under the ends of her eyes. The second passes above the eyes and eyebrows, ending at the middle of her eyes. The rest of the marks are distributed relatively evenly on her body. Her hands and feet all have one mark going across them.
She has a habit of licking her teeth when bored; this is not to be confused with hunger. She carries herself in the usual backwards stance. Her clothing style is rather flaunty, as a rule she finds that she gets shown the best wares if she can show that she and her family can afford them. Usually they involve a good amount of beading, and different fabrics. Since it’s harder to travel in skirts, she opts for trousers.
Her love of traveling, and the danger of the roads at times has gained her a taut enough physique in comparison to her race, most of her gained muscle mass is in her legs. She’s pretty agile, and knows enough to defend herself.
Personal Details

Education: - Varetine was sent to an average school for a couple years to learn simple things such as reading, writing, math, the sciences, much like other children her age. She was a bright child in school, if not a little lazy, but she always came on near the top. She picked up the essential things quickly, and stayed in pace with the other children. Most of her teachers over those years found that she had a love for geography. Many commented to her parents and family that that was one of the only classes that Varetine ever paid real attention in. At the age of 10 her grandparents, and Uncle, leaders of her family, decided that she should be taken out of her school and be taught the family business.
For the next 4 years up until her aging ceremony Varetine was taught everything her family did as merchants. Her family took her liking of geography as a charm, giving her the future occupation of Merchandise Scout. With that in mind Varetine worked through her studies with spirited fervor. To her, the prospect of finding good wares for her family business was far outweighed by the change to explore and see the world.
She spent the next few years following her father on his trips and having him show her examples of good wares. A couple years back, at the age of 18 she was allowed to start traveling on her own.
Varetine practices a small amount of water magic, as a child she had a couple books bought for her, and she practiced in her spare time. She still picks up cheap books here and there to learn a new thing or two, but for the most part it’s a very small part of her life.
Academic weaknesses: - Both because of her limited study and the little practice she has when casting her spells she can often hurt herself, cause them to backfire, or just not to work. The higher up in levels the spells are, the harder they are to cast of course, but she never really had the gift for magic. She has to work pretty hard to get somewhere, and she doesn’t.
At school she never really caught on to the way history was taught at the schools when she was young. She always had a very hands on approach to history, and so the book work done in many classes caused her problems. This hands on approach is another one of the things that fuels her love of traveling.
Main goal (dream) at this point in time: - At the moment Varetine’s curious personality and many influences in her life drive her to want to see as much of the world as she can. She may just be the type to put her nose where it doesn’t belong.
Overall Personality Description:- Like many of her kind Veratine took the MDV as an sign for change. Veratine believed early on that due to this virus she was alone, and took the best from this revelation. She could now travel wherever without many ties to tie her down, she had to worry little about companions, none about children. To her this was reassurance that her aspiration to travel as much as she could was what she was supposed to be doing. She’s an independent spirit and stubborn and hard-headed. She doesn’t take to suggestions about her own wellbeing or activities well, and tends to ignore even the most intellectual input on her behalf.
As a child her curiosity led her to fall out of trees, get stuck in caves, and earned her enough punishment to last a more reasonable child a lifetime. To this day she still dabbles in things she shouldn’t, and sticks her hands in holes full of spiders. Now her curiosity may be liable to get her both a good outcome or into a nice bit of trouble. She ends up with very little regret if she has to dig up some dirt on people to get a better deal or to keep herself safe.
But even so, she does find the genuine Terebori care creeping up on her every so often, so with even all the strain she takes to make sure she puts herself first there are times where she’ll throw her personal safety away. This may seem like kindness to some, but for her it seems to be an override and when it’s all over she’ll be very cross with herself, and the person she stepped in for. She feels very much that people unable to fend for themselves should have a better reason than “I didn’t expect this” or “I’m not a fighter”. And as much as she likes company and people to enjoy times with, she dislikes traveling company, and travels in groups very seldom. She dislikes having to be dependent and so dislikes the idea of having to take supplements at every meal to keep herself healthy.
Like the rest of her race, when it comes to buying goods or setting up contracts she’s ruthless. She earns her pay from a percentage of money earned through partnership contracts she sets up between sellers and her family. Being the sort that is ruthless on her own, and doesn’t rely on mercenaries or sheer force, she’s far more welcomed by prospective traders and can easily settle any disputes with her voice and her reason. One of the major things taught to her by her family was charisma, and she strives to make in her main tool in her occupation.
Of course under all this action and motion there’s still a part from Veratine’s past that was incredibly lazy. And even now it shows. There are days where she doesn’t feel like doing much anything at all and will laze about in be all day. Sometimes she’ll even call the people she had a meeting with that day instead of getting out of bed, and excuse herself for bone aches she doesn’t have.
Background Details
History/Background:- Varetine’s family originated from a small marsh village composed of her family and three more. Varetine spent a few blissful childhood years swimming about in the marsh and causing her parents trouble. But when it came to her education she was sent to a nearby human settlement to learn with the students there. She faced a little controversy with the humans, being Terebori, and there being few families who sent their kids there, but she managed to integrate rather over the years. She was pulled out of school at the age of ten and came back home to learn the rest of the family trade.
Home was very much the same, only her uncle had come back from his travels, and gained a high ranking in the family. She learned much around him, but the thing that rally struck her was his face at family meetings. It seemed to her that he was full of regret. He told her stories of traveling and his dreams to reach a high rank in the family but his face, and his tone let her know that he regretted settling back down in his home on the side of the marsh. She took a warning from this and told herself that she’d never really settle down and she would keep going, for herself, and for her poor uncle trapped in his home on the side of the marsh.
At the age of 13 she contracted the MDV, and was bed stricken for about 6 months. Her body reacted much like everyone else’s, and she left with the typical scars, sterility and her deficiencies. She was also set back half a year in her studies and so finished her studies in the middle of her 14th year instead of her projected 13th. Her live took a great many leaps and swerves and she ended up working with her father learning how to use what she’d been taught in actual trade. They traveled to many places, but the place that really struck her was the city of Istra. She saw so much potential in a number of opening businesses there. She decided that after she was allowed to travel by herself she’d find a way to allow those new businesses to thrive through financial backing.
It was only a little before her graduation that she realized that the MDV had allowed her to continue working toward the dream she’d decided to pursue as a little girl on her uncle’s lap. She expressed her anticipation by participating more actively in her father’s work, and bringing about much more helpful business idea’s along the way. This sort of behavior spend her to the day where they let her free to roam on her own and encouraged her family and higher-ups to respect decisions she made on her own, and come to an understanding, which although might have been blind, trusted her to know what was best.
Upon her graduation she traveled back to the city, and has been working there for a good amount of time. She hasn’t gotten very far, but has managed to set up a few contracts and such on the way there and inside the city itself. She finds that she enjoys city life and finds it invigorating. She bought a small apartment where she keeps her more bulky things, but she rarely spends more than a few nights a week there, spending more time running about at night, or going from in to in. Only on her lazy days does she ever spend a long time in her home.
