As soon as he had seen the city on the horizon, he had been humbled. This insignificant feeling only grew stronger as he approached. The traffic unnerved him, as did the smells and the people. Unfortunately, especially the people. The empathic waves they emitted seemed to seldom be positive. He got the distinct feeling that there are far less smiles here than there should be. Eyes followed him as he moved, some curious as to what he was, others simply brimming with pessimism. He attempted a few weak and clumsy smiles before giving up completely within minutes. This certainly was not what he had expected. The people of the city had no doubt caged themselves in this sad metropolis. Despite his ability to defend himself proficiently, he began to feel rather vulnerable, clutching onto the cloth of his garments. His arms continued to subconsciously move inward until his arms were completely folded across his chest, keeping his head low. How would he ever be able to last in a place like this? He knew he would survive it, and that it would change him. It is the consequence of seeking knowledge. Like a horde of treasure, you always have to defeat the dragon first. Surely everyone held a bit of information he could use. So, in a timid fashion which completely betrayed him to be a foreigner, he began to question. "Ma'am?" he chirped, calling the attention of middle-aged woman carrying a basket within the middle level of the city. She cast her eyes in his direction and was kind enough to stop and see what the foreigner needed of her. Her brows raised impatiently. "So sorry to bother you, Ma'am. I'd like to know the location of your city's temples." His arms came unfolded and drifted comfortably out from the confines of his colorful cloak. He became eased with this new knowledge that not everyone here was too focused on themselves to help a traveling monk. "Temples?" she replied. "Well, there is the temple, if that's what you mean." "Only one?" She woman grinned a knowing grin. Arcadian was slightly jealous she was able to. Still, he grinned back, matching her own expression almost perfectly. "What?" he coaxed her to continue. "Oh nothing. You'll see. It's located on the Upper Le-- You know what? See that path there?" she pointed into the distance. Arcadian nodded eagerly. "Follow that path to the very end, and when it forks, take a left. There's a holy man there at his stand wearing all white. He'll guide you." She almost resumed her duties when he chimed up once again, "Wait! Do you know if I can get a map anywhere?" "Ask for one when you get there," she said as she made her way on through. Arcadian did as the woman suggested, and eventually arrived at his destination. He received a map as well ...eventually. He wandered where he could until he came upon a room full of young faces of every race. He seemed to have walked in on a lesson. Instead of interrupting, he stood at the doorway and leaned against its frame, watching the lesson with a subtle smile. At last in this city, he had found a bit of calm. |
