“Sign the confession sir”

Tap, tap crack!

Silence

Logan waited silence. His gaze fixed on the terrorised eyes of his naked prisoner. It only took a moment for the pain to well up. A agonising scream tore from his blood filled throat, as the pain from his chiselled front teeth bit into his skull like white fire. Tears streamed down his grubby cheeks. His eyes screwed up to the point they looked like they might implode. His mouth a mess of broken teeth and loose blood gums. What a darling sight…

Logan waited a moment longer, turning the chisel and hammer smoothly in his hands.

His express was grim. His brow knitted into ugly frown. His lips curled into a distasteful sneer. His eyes showed some pity, or was it just regret. Neither really, just a longing to leave this place and go about his day once again… Why do I do this?

Either side of the brightly lit room stood two practitioners. His muscle and eyes one might say. The pair stood idly. They watching with lazy eyes are the scene played out before them, to use to these displays to be much bothered by them any more. Their thuggish looks were sealed behind leather masks, standard for The Royal Inquisitors yet Logan had drawn away from the dress code and revealed his identity freely. He knew he was a monster, there was little point hiding it, was there?

“Sign…..”, Logan grunted as he tapped the point of the chisel against the confession laid out upon the scarred table, based in front of the criminal.

The mans eyes flickered open for a moment and gazed at the neat piece of paper, now splatter with some droplet of gore. shame. The scripture was so good, a work of art one might say. The criminals eyes didn’t stand long and were quickly flickering away defiant manner.

“As you wish”, Logan heaved himself a few steps forwards and began once more. The chisel rose again and moved slowly toward the criminal. Time to practise my density, out standing how much the body can withstand. Well for a time that is.

Logan sat in silence, his hand crossed on his lap and a small smiled licked his lips as he looked out over the crowds toward the arenas centre where a pair of men were going at once another with wooden swords, displaying their abilities to the crowded in order to get them worked up for the following battle.

With a huff he stretched forward and grasped a fine white tea pot from the table and began to pour himself a brew into a fine china cup. The scene almost looked surreal, his black clothing clashing with the purity of the chairs and table, his gruff appearance, showing some elegance.

For a moment he sat staring at the empty chair before him. All this tea and no one to share with…. “Tea any one!”, he bellowed with a smile above the roar of the crowd. No takers? Oh well he sheared to himself and let the fine tea pot clatter onto the table as he took a hold of his cup and drank healthily.

Then he could feel a slight tug on his cloak. "Sir, may I have a little tea?" She asked softly. Ciri had come, not by choice but by duty. Apparently the advisers wanted the Prince to learn what "entertainment" was. Ciri was requested to come but the advisers said they had no room for her so she wandered till she could find a place. She heard the man ask if anyone wanted tea and she, being a child, assumed he meant that literally. She looked up at him with her mossy green eyes and for once, there was actually bliss and innocence, something only a child had anymore.

He drank healithly for a moment, letting the warm liquid run down his throat and lick his stomach, but the soft tug of a small hand on his jacket caught his attention and stopped him in his tracks.

"Sir, may I have a little tea?"

“Well know, that was unexpected”, Logan uttered under his breath for a moment as he glanced down at the small child. For a moment his expression was firm, but he soon lightened up and a smooth smile rose over his lips.

He rose to his feet and waved a hand lightly toward the white chair opposite him. For a moment he though to drag the chair out for her, but he decided again it. Today’s events had dulled what gentlemen there was in for today.

Taking a seat again he grasped the handle of the tea pot and poured some of the brew into a identical china cup for the small lady. For a moment he grip the cup in silence, thinking how odd this must have appeared. Member of The Royal Inquisitors, having tea with a child! Seemed strange in his mind, and where was the child’s parents. No point dwelling on these things, he thought to himself with a smile.

“So what brings you here then?”, he asked with a smile as he handed the small child the cup with a warm smile.

THe child thanked him happily and sipped the tea. Then she blew on it to cool him down and then she sipped it, her small legs not reaching the ground, just swinging back and forth. "I'm here with the Prince. Normally I'm with the Jester but he doesn't like such things but the Prince wanted me to come along. Though I find I'm not fond of this much either," she said. Because she was so short, he could only see her head over the table. Then he saw her place her doll on her side of the table. "Why are you here mister? No one else is drinking tea," she pointed out, all the while, a smile remained on her face. It was not common for children her age to attend such dealings so there wasn't much for her to do besides talk to strange men.

"I'm here with the Prince. Normally I'm with the Jester but he doesn't like such things but the Prince wanted me to come along. Though I find I'm not fond of this much either,"

Logan’s eyes widened for a moment. A friend of the prince? How very interesting. He watched her for a moment over the rip of his cup. A well connected child, yet not to bright, all kinds of people might steal her away due to her social status, who knows, what the royals might pay for her. His eyes watched as she sat her doll down, a smile licked his lips and a warm feeling stuck his heart, however dark his line of work, a child still could bring joy to his heart.

"Why are you here mister? No one else is drinking tea,"

“oh I come here to relax from time to time, my line of work can sometimes be so…quite, the noise can almost feel calming. Please give my regards to the prince, I was a fond follower of his late father during my day as a guard. Hopefully our highness will stand up to his legacy. “, Logan replied with a smile. “How rude of me, my name of Logan Longley, I’m a member of his highnesses Royal Inquisitors, might I ask your name? and who might your lovely friend be?”, He asked with a smile and a nod in the direction of the small doll as he leaded back heavily ion his chair.

"I'm Ciri, and this here is Maddie," she smiled to him and her small hand reached over and shook his hand. "Nice to meet you Mister Logan," the girl said and sipped her drink. "Thank you for the tea mister," she said graciously. "So what goes on in the areana here anyways? The advisers wanted the Prince to come and the Prince wanted me to come but the advisers didn't so now I'm stuck wandering around a place till I find something to do. Luckily, I met Mister Logan!" She said brightly, smiling up to him.

"I'm Ciri, and this here is Maddie,", "Thank you for the tea mister”

He nodded and smiled in reply. She was a cute little thing. He’d have to make sure to take her back in the direct of the royals rather than let her go astray. Never can trust these crowds.

"So what goes on in the arena here anyways? The advisers wanted the Prince to come and the Prince wanted me to come but the advisers didn't so now I'm stuck wandering around a place till I find something to do. Luckily, I met Mister Logan!"

A light chuckle rolled from Logan and he grinned down on the child. She was oh so innocent. “Well the arena…could be decided as a place of violence. Luckily all the killings done at a distance, so we aren’t in harms way, unpleasant business really”, logan explained, a little blunt but soon enough it would be rather difficult to cover up the true nature of this place.

He could understand the reasoning of being the prince here. A man must know at a young age the value of a life but her…perhaps he thought of her as different because of her sweet nature, he wasn’t sure, but he didn’t think it fair for her to be here.

"Then why do people come mister? Why do people come to watch people hurt other people? The way of adults made no sense to her and it often confused her. She was glad to be a child, she didn't ever want to grow up completely, but she did want to be taller. Having tea with this man was slightly difficult.

She took a sip and at the exact moment she looked into the arena, a man with a real sword stabbed the other, then sliced off his head. Both men and the ground turned crimson and the crowd began to cheer and clap. Ciri sat wide-eyed, her jaw dropped, then she dropped her cup. When she heard the crash of the cup, she looked down then to Logan. "Oh, I'm so sorry mister, I didn't mean to drop your pretty cup," she said, sliding down the chair and doing her best to clean up the broken shards.

"Then why do people come mister? Why do people come to watch people hurt other people?”

“Because humanity is sick…”, he muttered to himself quietly, his head dropped slightly as he gazed down into his tea. He was sick. His eyes flicked up at the sound of crashing china. As a reflect his free hand was touching the hilt of his sword.

"Oh, I'm so sorry mister, I didn't mean to drop your pretty cup”

Watching for a moment as she went to clear up the shards but quickly rose to his feet and moved to her side. “We wouldn’t want you to cut yourself“, he said with a smile as he removed a leather cloth from his jacket pocket and swept the shards to one side.

“Are you feeling alright my dear”, he asked with a smile as he returned to his seat. His eyes wondered off toward the arenas centre, he was the scene, a bitter smile ran across his lips. “I see, maybe we should take you back to the prince, or do you want to stay for a little longer?”, he asked in a soft tone.

The advisers don't like me very much. I'm not royal or noble in any way. I came from the poor place and lived there alone for a year after my parents got sick and died. The Jester took me in, in the palace, to be the Prince's friend cause he's my age but the bigger people think I'm a bad influence so even though the Prince wanted me to come, they won't let me sit with him," she told the man. Her hands say in her lap and then she reached up and took Maddie in her arms. "So I have to stay, till they leave but I can't sit with them," she told him. In short, she was forced to stay.

Logan sat for a moment, a thoughtful frown formed across his brow. How very unexpected. A poor child is she….guess people wouldn’t notice if she vanished, Logan thought to himself as he shook his head. “Well I guess your have to endure my company for a little longer then”, he replied with a smile.

“More tea?”, he asked with a smile as he pulled a clean handkerchief from pocket and cleaned his cup out of any left over tea and settled the cup once again on the table top and poured another. He eyed the doll for a moment, then pushed the cup across the table toward the child.

“So other than spending time with the Prince and his jester, what else do you do to fill your time might I ask?”, he asked with a smile as he tilted lightly back in his chair and tugged at the cuffs of his jacket, straightening them up a tad. A man must keep his appearance up, even if it was a unwelcoming one.

"Well, I like horses aso I go play with them alot. Before the Jester took me in, my neighbor would pay me to help take care of his horses. I want to be a trainer when I grow up. They are such beautiful, strong, and majestic creatures," she told him with a smile. "I wish I was like them," she said dreamily.

"So what do you do Mister?" She asked him sipping the tea from his cup graciously, hugging Maddie close to her, still a little shaken from such a bloody sight. She didn't understand why people came to such things, it seemed almost barbaric.

Never had much use for the beasts, just for transport that is. Logan didn’t see the beauty in horses like some people but he wasn’t rude about it. He had road a few in his youth, wealthy families normally own a stable or two and he was born of noble stuff, even if it didn’t appear much like it.

"So what do you do Mister?"

“No point dressing it up I guess”, he said with a smile. “I was recently a guard, but in the last month a few turns of events have placed me in the services of The Royal Inquisitors” he watched the girls expressions for a moment, then added, “I deal with criminals”.

"Criminals? Like how? You talk to them and stuff?" She asked him curiously. She had heard of the inquisitors but she didn't know anything about them. She just knew that people both feared and respected them. But to her, he seemed nice so she didn't understand why people were scared of them. "Why are people scared of inquisitors? You seem nice to me!" She said with a big smile.

He smiled at the child, so innocent. “Well I talk to them in a sense….and persuade them to sign confessions to their crimes. Some people don’t like being told what to do and they dislike our methods I guess. Myself I think people overreact, I’m nice enough aren’t I? There‘s nothing scary about me”, he asked with a grin and tried to do his best to cover up the gory truth of his employment. God he hated himself right now, lying so to a child. He guessed the truth would be told soon enough by come one close to her, he just hoped she remember him as a good man, not a evil one.
