As soon as he had seen the city on the horizon, he had been humbled. This insignificant feeling only grew stronger as he approached. The traffic unnerved him, as did the smells and the people. Unfortunately, especially the people. The empathic waves they emitted seemed to seldom be positive. He got the distinct feeling that there are far less smiles here than there should be. Eyes followed him as he moved, some curious as to what he was, others simply brimming with pessimism. He attempted a few weak and clumsy smiles before giving up completely within minutes. This certainly was not what he had expected. The people of the city had no doubt caged themselves in this sad metropolis.

Despite his ability to defend himself proficiently, he began to feel rather vulnerable, clutching onto the cloth of his garments. His arms continued to subconsciously move inward until his arms were completely folded across his chest, keeping his head low. How would he ever be able to last in a place like this? He knew he would survive it, and that it would change him. It is the consequence of seeking knowledge. Like a horde of treasure, you always have to defeat the dragon first.

Surely everyone held a bit of information he could use. So, in a timid fashion which completely betrayed him to be a foreigner, he began to question.

"Ma'am?" he chirped, calling the attention of middle-aged woman carrying a basket within the middle level of the city. She cast her eyes in his direction and was kind enough to stop and see what the foreigner needed of her. Her brows raised impatiently.

"So sorry to bother you, Ma'am. I'd like to know the location of your city's temples." His arms came unfolded and drifted comfortably out from the confines of his colorful cloak. He became eased with this new knowledge that not everyone here was too focused on themselves to help a traveling monk.

"Temples?" she replied. "Well, there is the temple, if that's what you mean."

"Only one?"

She woman grinned a knowing grin. Arcadian was slightly jealous she was able to. Still, he grinned back, matching her own expression almost perfectly.

"What?" he coaxed her to continue.

"Oh nothing. You'll see. It's located on the Upper Le-- You know what? See that path there?" she pointed into the distance. Arcadian nodded eagerly. "Follow that path to the very end, and when it forks, take a left. There's a holy man there at his stand wearing all white. He'll guide you."

She almost resumed her duties when he chimed up once again, "Wait! Do you know if I can get a map anywhere?"

"Ask for one when you get there," she said as she made her way on through.

Arcadian did as the woman suggested, and eventually arrived at his destination. He received a map as well ...eventually. He wandered where he could until he came upon a room full of young faces of every race. He seemed to have walked in on a lesson. Instead of interrupting, he stood at the doorway and leaned against its frame, watching the lesson with a subtle smile. At last in this city, he had found a bit of calm.

Lilly chocolate colour skin was rapped in a dazzling orange strapped dress which was cut short, just below her knee’s, exposing the lower half of her smooth legs. The hem of her dress was decorated with white vine stick work, while the rest of her dress was plain and undecorated, yet still ever so lovely. The material of her dress so something like silk, yet it shifted in colour, moving from lighter to darker with he slightest movement of her body.

Her lovely self was moving though the halls of the temple with some grace and cheer in her step. Though she did have a distaste for the place and they way they use her in the past following her husbands death but the holy order did need it’s stocks of fine fabrics replenished often and she was a fine source for such things. The coin was good to.

Today’s negotiations has been completed and a number of goods and coin had been exchanged, which were currently being hauled about by a number of large folk ranging from Humans, to Elves and even a few Dwarfs.

Breaking away from all the fuss and fluster she roamed the halls for a time, gazing over old rooms of memory and exchanging pleasantries with a number of passer byes and catching up with a few old faces who hadn’t ended up on her bad side after her retreat from the holy temple.

During her travels she set her eyes on something rather unusual. In all her 85 years she had never truly laid her eyes upon such a creature before. Smoothing her expression and making sure not to offend she took up a place on the other side of the door way, taking care not to startle the figure with any sudden appearances on her behalf.

“Lovely isn’t it”, she said with a soft smile as he watch over the events before her. So young, so pure, most of them were probably completely unaware of their differences and cultural backgrounds, unlike most adults who grew terrible options about others and took intranasal actions. “I’m Lilly Remington and you are?”, she asked with a almost cheeky smile on her lips as she gaze up toward the handsome figure before her, which was a rare expression for a Elf and was more a habit she had gain from being in human company for far to long.

The soft, sweet sound of a serene female's voice drifted from beside him. His smile grew a little wider, giving a hint of that completely inhuman grin of his.

"M hm. Though lovely wouldn't quite be the word I'd use. I'd call it refreshing." He blinked at the class with a kind of tired happiness, then began to turn to his conversational companion.

"My name's Arcadia-WOAH!" his eyes widened as they eventually met with the elf's gorgeous features. His skin became flushed with a dark wine red. "Ah... I-I'm sorry. My name's Arcadian. Your beauty caught me completely off guard, I apologize. It's a pleasure to meet you."

Arcadian slithered back a bit and presented her with a graceful and polite bow of his head, gripping one edge of his cloak in hand to spread it back behind him in order to signify he meant her no harm and carried no dangerous weapons.

"Lady Remington, you are the first in this entire city who has approached me on their own accord. Considering your dashing charisma and social skill, would you be inclined to help a stranger?" Rising back up, he pushed the rest of his cloak behind his shoulders and assumed a casual position. "I'm new here. I lack food and shelter for the night. If you could point me in a direction where I might earn my keep, I would be most grateful."

Lilly nodded sagely but a slight frown rolled over his lips by his response. She presume he had had some bad experience of the city so far. It was a hard place after all, for residence and new comers. She wondered if he had suffered from any racial hate.

After his second comment Lilly held back and flush of frustration and annoyance by his words but held back any sign of it. He’s most likely not made much contact with elves before, a genuine mistake Lilly, he didn’t know any better. The frustrion was brought on by his display of affection following his comment on her beauty an action no prohibited in Elven society while in public.

With a light curtsy of her own she smiled softly to her company and graceful returned to her forma stance Her eyes were fixed upon his face, yet didn‘t stray towards his lower body in case of causing offence upon his behalf, she was certainly unaware of his cultures customs.

“I’m always happy to help another in need”, she replied with a smile as he straightened up and retook his tall stance. With a soft smile she began to guess what kind of talent this fellow might process, yet there was no harm in asking was there?

“What kind of employment might you be interested in? I myself am but a simple Seam dress , so I’ve little ways of offering you funds, yet I am in need of a escort home, might I offer you a sum for your company?”, Lilly asked with a soft smile toward her company.

"That would be adequate, Lady Remington. I am confident that I could protect you." He fell away from the doorway. His enormous tail moved against the ground to propel him towards the direction from which they had come. It was a peculiar thing to see if she had never seen his kind before. He directed an arm out towards the halls in a polite gesture for her to join him on the return to the outside.

"I'm a monk," he explained. "I think my ideal position would be a librarian, honestly. I suppose I should see someone here about a position like that, hm? Or perhaps you know someone who might need my services for a more permanent job?"

No, he had never seen a female elf before. Male, yes. Many different races lived among his people in the tribe. Unfortunately, the one elf he had met was a little too pompous to ask questions. He had absolutely no clue of their customs. Surely it can't be a custom to oppress flattery, though!

"But enough about me. I'm boring. Tell me about yourself. What is your favorite thing in the world?" he grinned, casting his eyes back at her for a glance. He grinned because he began to remember his favorite things, and began to make a list of them in order to inquire later if this city holds them.

His movement were some what alien but she felt she would soon adjust. Falling into step she slipped away from the door way and fell into step with him. Her walk was somewhat estimated at all times and the soft slap of her saddles rung against the hallways walls as they moved along, the song of his tail on the other hands, was something she couldn’t quite describe.

"I'm a monk," he explained. "I think my ideal position would be a librarian, honestly. I suppose I should see someone here about a position like that, hm? Or perhaps you know someone who might need my services for a more permanent job?"

“Hmm a monk you say? Very interesting, you will have to tell me all about it, I’m ever so interested in different cultures”, she was quick to think he may come from some other faith, seeing as their were a few in the area, but she was more interested in the mans people, she had never quite met anyone like him in a sense; as he didn’t dress like those of the temple, which in affect was very understandable with his appendages.

“Oh my no means Sir Arcadia I would describe you as boring, you do yourself no justice. Hmm well I guess my work really, I love the feel of my fabrics and I also rather enjoy repairing what basic machinery myself and my ladies work upon”, She spoke with a hint of cheer and cheekiness to her tone and she let her thoughts wonder about her machinery, the smells and the great feel of oil and grease under her nails.

“What about yourself?”

"Oh, alright, well," he appeared to be a very expressive individual as his brows raised as he spoke, gesturing some with his hands and a slight head-tilt, "I suppose I might be interesting here, but back home I'm fairly average... And the 'Sir' prefix is completely unnecessary. Speak to me as if you've known me forever."

"Fabrics!" he exclaimed after she ended her explanation. "Absolutely! There's nothing like the feel of freshly-woven cotton and silks. I can stand behind you when you say those are your favorite things. As for machinery, I'm afraid I lack any knowledge to be able to explain my excitement." An apologetic, lop-sided half-smile followed.

"My favorite thing in the world..." he sighed, eyes drifting to no location in particular. "That would have to be... laying in soft, wet grass just after a rainfall. I'm never closer to the entire world and so at peace than when I do that. It feels as if nothing exists, has ever existed, but that moment. I also enjoy stories, telling and listening to them, as well as knowing people."

He fell behind a bit, not knowing where he was going and allowing her to lead the way.

It was a simple cloak that he wore. On it was a fasten that was invisible from the outside, so only the folds of fabric allowed any on-looker to see where one side ended and the other began. The only thing unusual about it was the colors. The bottom ended with a vibrant red color, fading up into a kind of mustard pigment. Its hem was lined with gold threads which, together, formed a simple, waving design. On the inside, it was the same. Beneath, he wore an odd shirt. It was sleeveless, possibly made from the skin of a deer, with a tall collar. A thick red sash was tied above his hips where the shirt ended and the draperies around his waist began. They were nothing but loose cloth draped around scales, hiding two feet of him from the red sash down. The cloth was made of a flowing fabric the same color as his shirt.

"We have enough time for many conversations. If you're curious, I can tell you more about myself, but I would also like to know more about you and this city."

“Same goes for myself, I lost my nobility some time ago”, she spoke with a smile, displaying her feelings upon the matter, which in truth were mixed but she felt she was a better person now to have know love and lost her family rather than never loved at all.

She laughed softly at his excitement on the topic, he was something of a character that was for sure. “Oh I don’t know to much about machinery myself either, just how to meant my own instruments really”, she explained with a smile. As she walked she spread her finger tips to one side and let the cool white titles of a corridor wall kiss her finger tips.

“Oh I’ve never truly done such a think. Odd really….”, she made a mental note on the matter, making sure to go out of her way and take a trip to three farms and maybe make of day of it, it did seem rather pleasant.

She took the lead and lead them down a short stair case, which lead out to the western side of the building, where they would exit close to the halls of healings. “Well how about truth for a truth. You ask a question, I’ll answer, then I’ll do the same towards yourself? Does that seem fair?”

Arcadian had an awkward time getting down the stairs. It seemed he was taking the movements of a sidewinder, gradually lumping his tail, tip first, down each step, like moving backwards as he was facing the front.

"Yes, that seems perfectly fair. Alright, so it's my turn, right? What is your most valued treasure?" his attention was on her hands as she danced them down the hall here and there.

He didn't fool around very much when getting to know a person. Immediately asking for her weakness, if she were to respond honestly, he would be able to take whatever it was she held dearest and turn it on her. It was a test, somewhat. He was still genuinely curious what her answer would be, but for her to open up and share something like that, just after meeting him, would allow him to know more about her than the simple answer to a question. She couldn't say he was a cheater - he did only ask one thing. As cunning as any serpent, though, he managed to figure out a way to get more from her.

He was a little more excited about it all than he should have been. After all, it was his first day in a new world. There was so much knowledge here and he greedily wanted it all, as fast as possible.

His eyes became fixed on her's, unmoving, with an uncommonly serious expression.

My most valued treasure? Hmm well now that is quite the privet question but I feel compelled to answer seeing as I did start this game of truths”, she replied with a smile as she pressed her palms into a pair of heavily embodied door handles and pushed the mighty gilded doors before her wide often, revelling a scene of orderly chaos which was the upper levels of the halls of healing.

Currently the halls were alive with actively. People flocked from here to there, aiding the ill and tending to the recovering. Men and women of all ages and races did their best to give their services. Some leaning a magical hands, other parting with kind words.

“The love for my past husbands is my greatest treasure, I will always keep him with me”, she spoke in a soft tone and let her eyes meet his levelly and gestured for him to enter the halls of healing, where miracles happened. These were the minor halls, where the recovering were held, further on, deeper in the maze that is the temple, men and women could be found suffering from the most horrid things.

“Welcome to the Halls of Healing, I served here for a time, a pleasant place from time to time”, she added with a smile as she gazed out toward the massive opening at the end of the room. The gaping mass, which was a window, stared out at the glory that was Istria. The sound of the city bells rung clear in the air and the sweet smell of a fresh bloom out side brought much pleasure to those on the path of recovery.

“Tell me, where do you hail from?”, Lilly asked with some curiosity as she stepped forth into the room and slowly moved though the masses who lay in their sick beds.

"Ah, well, that wasn't quite the sort of answer I was seeking. Don't take me as an ass, but since your love is incorporeal, it wouldn't be a very large risk to share the information. Either way," he grinned brightly, "it was personal. I appreciate it."

He glanced up at the hive of healing, tilting his head curiously to the side, just a bit. He quietly took in the view of the city, now knowing where to come for such a pleasure. He was also thankful for her showing this to him.

"I hail from the eastern tribe of Akua Lahui, based in the great valley of the mountains. My family has lived there for three generations until now." His attention was taken from the scenery and replaced on her, endowing her yet again with a big, happy, care free grin. "I am quite sheltered, if you couldn't have already assumed. Anything that isn't in my hometown I've only ever read about in books. I might even go so far as to say that this city is a complete culture shock."

He passed his eyes briefly over the ailed. An urge tugged at the back of his head to help, but he knew he'd get stuck here forever, and they seemed to be doing an alright job... Besides, he already had a job to do now.

"Alright Lilly. Next question. This one's more of a 'yes' or 'no'. Considering your love for your former husband is the greatest thing you treasure, am I correct in assuming that I'd never have a chance with you? You're out of my league right?" Arcadian said this with a kind of pre-affirmed disappointment, but one never knew for sure until one asked.

She smiled at his words. He was ever so naive of her pasted situations with the marriage of her other half. The very action had brought her from riches to rags in but a night. Her love for her past husband was something her family hates yet her feelings were unchanged.

“I’ve never heard of such a place. Clearly you can also guess I’ve never came across such a soul as yourself. For the culture shock…well your get use to it in time, I advice staying on the upper levels for safety, the middle levels for trade and I advice avoid the lower levels if you can. It’s a unkind place”, she spoke from experiences and it was evident in her tone.

She stopped in her paces for a moment at his question. He did ask some most difficult questions and his display of feelings would be flattering for some but not herself. With a smile she brushed it a side like she often did with those who didn’t societies with Elves often. It wasn’t like she was going to challenge him to a duel over the matter.

“Yes or no is far to simple of a answer my friend”, she said with a slightly cheeky looking smile on her lips as she glanced over her shoulder at her company and pressed onwards though the massed towards the main doors which led out toward the city.

“With some training and education in the social structure of Elvin life, you might just become a love interest my dear Arcadian”, She said with a smile, forcing the words from her mouths, thus breaking the rule herself on showing affection toward another in public. Rather barbaric but quite invigorating she thought to herself with a soft child like smile.

“My turn. How many lovers have you had over your entire life?”

His reaction was one of excitement, lifting his head to reach his full, somewhat intimidating height on the very thick of his tail. His brows lifted and he beamed. He had a chance!

"Then I will make it my top priority to begin researching! I give you a rough estimate of three days," he extended his index, middle, and ring finger to the heaves.

Then her question came. His smile faded a bit and he nervously rubbed the back of his neck.

"Ahhh it's about time you asked me a question like that. I have had two... over my entire life. Pathetic, hm? My excuse: the training a monk has to go through in order to master the elements is rigorous and time-consuming... Eheh..."

A light flush painted his cheeks now.

"Change of subject! Hah," a nervous laugh. "Hmm... How would you like to die?"

The fact that she had never seen a Basilisk surprised him a bit. He had listened to so many stories of his friends who had wandered out into the world. And the tip about staying on the upper level was directly noted, though Arcadian knew he would eventually find his way there. It was part of his personal mission to see it all. That included the ugly as well as the beautiful.

“Well I wish you luck on your quest. Hopeful your surprise me”, she replied with a smile. She placed her palms once more against the heavy metals handles of the healing halls doors and with some grace, forced the massive doors open.

She took a light sign of relief as she stepped out from the halls and into the open air. With a moment of hesitation on her companies half she stared down at the stairs and recalled his trouble yet she didn’t know any other way down, so she trekked onwards.

“I wouldn’t call it pathetic, more charming than anything. I’ve only taken one, I prefer a man who’s reserved”, she replied with a smile as she careful made her way down the white marble steps, avoiding any embarrassment, such as fooling flat on her face.

“That’s a bit of a grim topic isn’t it? Well myself, I would like to pass in my sick bed, possibly in my sleep surrounded by my loved one. I’m only in my early eighty, I’m not looking to kick the buckets as the humans say any time soon”, even though it was a sad topic, she still kept a pleasant tone to her voice at all times. As she reached the bottom steps, she turned softly to face him, letting her dress sweep around her and settle once again.

“What do you find attractive in a person? Race, gender, background, looks, personality?”.

"Death doesn't have to be grim," he explained with an open-palmed gesture as he made his way down. It wasn't any trouble at all. It just looked a little strange going backwards with his bottom half. "We only fear it because we don't understand it. When someone around me dies, I always think 'they get to know what lies beyond before I do. How lucky.' It really is the greatest adventure of all. And think of this. Every time someone dies, a child is born. It's quite possible that that child might not have been born if the extra living space hadn't been given."

Early eighties. That was one thing he knew about elves - they live a very long time. That, and they're pretty. Everything else would have to be researched.

When she stopped, so did he on the second to last step. His tail and all of its markings were laid out, draping all over the ground. This would most likely be the best time to see just how huge it was. No doubt, it hid beneath its scales some massive power.

"Gender?" he blinked. "Okay. Well. I like elven women with green eyes and medium-dark hair. She would have to be very polite and considerate." He beamed. Surely she knew that, though. "I'm kidding. Well, I'm not, but I don't suppose that would be the answer you're looking for. I am heterosexual. Race doesn't matter a whole lot, as long as they show some kind of "humanity". I guess I'm naturally attracted to the kind of look I grew up with, which would mean graceful women. Female Basilisks, you know, move very well. Posture is important. I can't be with a lover who doesn't show respect for themselves and their bodies. They have to be civil and courteous, but when we are alone, I would like someone to play with who doesn't mind opening up completely to me. Still, I like a female that can always surprise me. Backgrounds don't matter, as long as she has atoned for whatever harm she has done to anyone in the past. I think that's about it. Oh! And she has to have enough time on her hands to love me." A lop-sided smile grew. "Not many people think about that, but I don't think it's very healthy if you don't see each other often."

He slithered down and around her, looking out at the city. He had entered the temple from another door. This was a picture he had not yet seen. A gentle breeze met him like an old friend.

"Mm," he glanced towards the base of his tail, noting how corrupted the ground was here at the entrance of a holy place. Quickly, he made a scan of his surroundings to locate what exactly he would be able to exchange to give this entrance a gift. There wasn't much around save for stone and concrete. Ah yes. The stone.

Arcadian moved until he was beside the staircase. When he had arrive, he delicately placed his hand on the ground and closed his eyes. A very serene look was adopted on his features. His head began to feel light as tiny green vines began uncurling from beneath his fingertips. The vines spread quickly, crawling up the side of the staircase, blossoming these exotic violet flowers. Soon the ugly stone path, cracked and worn from the exchange, was covered in beautiful greens. Almost immediately the entrance began to look much more elegant and ancient.

"I place of the Gods ought to look less impersonal, don't you think?" he opened his eyes, wearing the same expression, only a bit more tired. "I have a bad feeling about this city's beliefs. If a person were to love and be loved by the Gods, I don't think I'd be seeing such sad faces here and there..."

Arcadian joined Lilly once more, and gestured for her to continue.

"It was my turn, wasn't it? Alright... Besides your home, where is your favorite place to be in the city?"

-----

(Hope I did the magic thing alright. First time n' all.)
