What is Torchwood?

Torchwood Three is based in Cardiff, a city located along the Rift. We've always had a reputation for working 'under the radar', as something of a renegade outpost. With a profile like that, you make enemies, but these qualities ensured our survival when our powerful and much larger sister organisation, Torchwood One was destroyed in the Battle of Canary Wharf. With the fall of Torchwood One, many of the records from Torchwood's 130 year history were damaged beyond repair. But not everything was lost. Our computer is as old as Torchwood itself - a piece of organic, living, intuitive technology light years ahead of anything on Earth. It salvaged what it could, and continues at the heart of our work today.

What is the rift?

A rift in space and time. Unpredictable and elusive, it's a gateway for alien creatures, alien weapons, all manners of alien technology and time anomalies to enter our world. The Rift has been the flotsam and jetsam of the universe since the dawn of time.

How did it all start?

The original Torchwood Institute was founded in 1879 by Queen Victoria, to defend the Empire against the threats posed to it by alien forces. It survived and flourished down the decades, becoming stronger and, some say, more arrogant. The fall of Torchwood One was a lesson we must all learn. However, Torchwood One is back and now we must work together with them to rebuild Torchwood and everything that we entail. Torchwood four is still missing - we'll find them one day, I'm sure, and I have a feeling that Torchwood Four will reappear sooner than we expect. Torchwood Two is in located Glasgow, and...well, enough has been said there, I think.

We need to hold ourselves together - we need to fight, because the 21st century is where everything changes, and we're not gonna miss it for the world. We're not losing grip this time, and if we do...then the whole world is gonna fall onto its knees. We need a little help sometimes from a blue box...but when he's not here, we need to save the world on our own. Are we going to be monsters or heroes? I don't know - life isn't always a game of 'kiss and tell'.

Never underestimate what you do not understand!
