Is there any possibility of a real steam loco being built for Scarborough's North Bay Railway or one of the extisting locos being converted (like the Bure Valley did with Tracey Jo) - I'm assuming there's no 20" gauge steam locos in the uk already.

We are in the process of sorting out how to fund a steam engine and what to build.

Whilst you never say never, it is unlikely that any of the existing four will be converted to steam. Two reasons; with the intensive service that we are putting in place, we will need at least 3 loco's available at peak times and 1 spare.

Also, the four main loco's are of historic significance in that they are the oldest (Neptune) 2nd (Robin Hood) 3rd (Triton) and 4th (Poseidon) oldest diesel hydraulic locomotives in the world and accordingly, I would not like to change that record.

It could be done though.

At present, we are planning a narrow gauge Bagnall - 'Sipat' class 0-4-0. The aim is to get 60= people to contribute £2.50 per week . Adding the tax back, we should be able to build it within 200 weeks - 4 years.

It will be owned by the group outside my ownership, but the aim is for all who are involved with its construction to be able to train to drive her on an as and when basis. Mathematically, she should be able to pull 3 coaches and at 4' wide will fit down the track.

Others have more grand idea's for a bigger locomotive, but the cost rises dramatically and it will either take more people or more time.

The aim is that it is a loco built by Scarborough and District people for a local railway for the benefit of the general public at large.

Let me know if you are coming to Scarborough at all and I will sort out the full 10 bob tour for you including a footplate ride or if you want to join in with the friends Group to build the engine, let me know. Same goes for anyone else interested in brining steam to the NBR.

All the best
