I don't think you could really regauge a Wren down, if that's what you mean - it would probably be too big! The only locos I can think of that might be suitible for regaguing are:

1. The 18" gauge Curwen atlantic Crompton, which I suspect might be a bit underpowered, and
2. The Crewe/Horwich works shunters Pet and Wren, which the NRM would probably never agree to being modified!

But since David Humphries knows the line better than anyone else on this forum, surely its probably best to go along with his suggestion?

I agree with Nick, though, that I would not want to see any of the current locos converted, especially not Neptune and Triton. I have fond memories of those two from my childhood, and I wouldn't want to see them butchered into something they never were. As has been said, they are historic engines in their own right - converting them to steam power would be akin to converting the Romney pacifics into diesels! And in any case, though I'm not an expert engineer, the general proportions of the locos suggest to me that any conversion would be over-boilered and under-cylindered. A brand new engine is the only way to go!
