I say restore and run the engines, run them to the ground, then restore them and run them again!

If people insist on preserving the originality of engines, then eventually everything will be stuffed and mounted to preserve the fabric of the locos.

As for the whole "replacing of frames" thing, locos in BR days on heavy overhauls would occasionally recieve a set of brand new main frames to replace those that were cracked to hell. The GWR were fans of this (well they did recycle damned near everything). in fact as I'm on that topic, we can just about assume that most big GWR locos are actually not, as they would recieve new motion and cylinders and other assorted bits (even new chassis) from other locos being scrapped or rebuilt or in for a "heavy".
