Often regarded as the poor relation to steam locos, 'fake steam' locos powered by anything other than steam have been the staple of many a miniature railway. Often derided by enthusiasts but beloved of visitors and economically-minded operators alike, these so-called 'Pretenders' have their place in both history and the present. Many can be said to be true models - in that they really do get quite close to the appearance of a 'real' steam loco. Others are caricatures or fanciful interpretations of steam locomotives. Whether you love or hate them, they're here to stay. Personally, I adore them. Their versatility and individuality (and often imagination that fired their design) are, I think, what can make miniature railways so intriguing. SO: Over to you. What are your favourites, your most hated, the most ridiculous or the most interesting steam outline locos that you've come across? I'll start with mine. Baguley 2ft gauge 'Altonia', ![]() http://www.towerstimes.co.uk/history/articles/endofline.htm (and the Wicksteed Park variants, among others...) The Hudswell-Clarke Pacifics and Tanks, now at Blackpool, Scarborough and Butterley: ![]() from http://www.flickr.com/photos/bispham2/326250170/ My own attempt (my first ever miniature railway project, back in 2001) ![]() Can't forget the wonderful contraptions built for Battersea and Southport... in whichever guise they appeared, whether as 'Emmets', streamliners or even with the Southport Belle Pier diesel bodies on top... ![]() ![]() from http://www.lakesideminiaturerailway.co.uk/ And perhaps the delightful ex-Chessington 'Rocket'. I could go on! Your turn, chaps... |
