The next vehicle behind the tender was a 4 wheel box van (which has been mentioned before on another thread) which housed the gear to work the air brake on the carriages if I remember rightly. I'm pretty sure it was restricted to two carriages, whilest the Rio that was based there was able to haul the remainder.
