It was good to catch up with 'Mountaineer' over the weekend at Cleethorpes. The taller boiler really does change her looks and to me looks very 'O&K' (and indeed, OK :D ), but I can't help feeling that the smokebox door is on ever so slightly wonky! A couple of pics:

its looking good now but i still think there is still more work to do on the asthetics as time and money permits. My thoughts are wider cab and superstructure to the same width as the tender, wider and deeper front buffer beam, full length footplating along the sides and outside steam pipe covers. but thats just my opinion

As the owner thought that I would reply. The loco and tender are the same width, you just can't tell in the photo. As regards the buffer beam, this was looked at and decided against, to try and stick to her continental heritage. We still need to fit plates around the steampipe/ footplate area and above the motion brackets etc. We have no plans for steam pipe covers as we feel it would spoil the looks, a personal view. John Tasker has done a wonderful job aided by the team at Cleethorpes, and Roger Loxleys cylinder covers are excellent. We will no doubt see Mountaineers full potential this coming weekend when we revisit our friends at Kirklees along with No24.

I must admit, I think the appearance is now spot-on for a loco of European origin and style, full width superstructure etc would ruin it and make it look too 'British' in origin. Personally I would like to see steam pipe covers, but having looked at the loco I cannot actually see how they could be fitted without looking over-the-top.

I'm looking forward to seeing her run at Kirklees on Saturday :D

Mountaineer has now had air sanders fitted for the KLR this weekend. This will no doubt help climbing the hills in Yorkshire, as everyone knows its flat as a pancake here in Cleethorpes (NOT).

Really wish I could get away and over to KLR but having had to spend over 200 quid on the cab in the last 10 days I'm doomed to work this weekend :(

John Tasker & Co have put a lot of work into "Mountaineer", so I'm sure that it will perform.

If you miss "Mountaineer" at the KLR Gala this coming weekend, you will have second chance to see it away from home at the BVR Gala on the 10th / 11th October.

Best wishes,
David Barnes
