Just come to my attention that there was a serious derailment on the Wat Tyler MR at the end of June which required hospital treatment for five people. I understand the railway is now closed pending the outcome of a HSE investigation. Articles are here and here. Nothing mentioned as yet on the railway's website. |

Interesting to note that the rolling stock being used by the current operator is the same rolling stock that the previous operator of the railway was using. The previous operator had to have these carriages sent away as they kept derailing on the railway's return loop. In the end the previous operator stopped taking these carriages around the loop because they derailed too frequently. The return loop of the railway has a bend that double backs on itself and if it is taken at speed then a derailment is likely, especially if the bogies to not have enough lateral play in them to compensate for the irregularities in the track. When i operated the railway with the late Mr Bundock we had talked about removing this bend but the severn-lamb coaches we used seemed to go around with no problems so we left it in. Cheers Dan |

Interesting to note, but we do not know for sure the accident occurred on the baloon loop, unless you can confirm this?? The report said the accident only occurred "about 90 seconds into the ride" and near a patch of stinging nettles. Cheers, Dom Greenop DMR |

The 90s into the journey would probably suggest the loop, but you are right i can't confirm this or the real cause. I suppose that is up to the health and safety people. Cheers Dan |

I think the media have over hyped this abit to be honest, and so have the families who spoke out into the press. Shouldve been cleared up and continued operating. |

Was only there on Sunday 8th June and everything was OK. Had a ride and train was driven fine. No sign of any extension though. Loco was "St Albans Comet". Peter S. |

True, Nick, but my barrel-jumping comesthrough having had a similar incident at Dragon. The only major derailment we've had at Dragon was through reckless driving, and not only was the train derailed, but also physically broke the track (leaving a nice kink), as well as damaging the drive on the loco. The culprit, who shall remain nameless, walked away not too bothered and was subsequently told to not come back. He was warned several times of his excessive speed but would not listen to anyone. Now I'll be first to say that we at Dragon dont have top-notch trackwork, indeeedcurrently needs work in several places, but we never had anything beyond a coach bogie coming off on a dipped joint (no injuries) until this happened. 9 times out of 10, especially on 'freak' accidents of this nature, its the driving. If reports were along the lines of "oh the rides been getting rougher for ages, this was bound to happen", THEN the trackwork could be to blame, but instead reports were of reckless driving, even by regular riders. Interesting Dom, But beat this, In my life I have seen a tinkerbelle when a bridge gave way under it and tipped in to a bog, Ive seen a Knightly Gp45 upside down in a lake, a loco hanging of a viaduct being held up by a tree, a full train tip over down a bank, a bogie come up through a coach floor, a train separate and crash into the loco, a loco in a turtable pit, even a loco land in a car park off it's track and land next to a car!!!! I think that this is silly, the families that reported to the press have defiantly over hyped it. It must have been unbalanced or the track out of gauge....but it could have also been the coaching stock, I know that the two little red coaches at Rhyl had a nasty habit of derailing because they weren't balanced properly (we took the coaches off the train if they derailed) but now they run fine. But I feel sorry for the people that run the railway...their fun has been ruined...

I think we need to be very careful with our "informed" opinions here. There are many things that could have led to the accident and without being there or able to study the scene we cannot and should not really comment in the public domain. Particularly as when you Google the railway the top hits are this forum. No doubt the full story will come out eventually. |

Ill Say, a few years ago at sutton hall we had a de-railment on a santa trip (I was santa) we had some bad coal and slippery track so where top and tailing the train with the diesal which de railed (and may have ended up on its side) any way all the other stock was ok and the "off" was down to a "miss placed" stick. The local paper reoprted carnage "with all four carrages and loco crashed" having said that we only had two carriages at the time !! of cause no one got to see santa, but i seem to remember coming out to see what the noise was! Hi The derailment i was in when i was younger at somewhere i cant remember was caused by a passenger rocking the train... i wouldnt speculate on the cause especialy as the press then took picture of carriage matenance when they were on their sides and hyped up the story even more |
