I must concur with Stuart Ross and say that we should not speculate until the facts are known. I have seen an accident on a railway that I used to run at and it was caused by a whole series of cicumstances cumming together at the same time to create an unfortunate incident. No one factor was to blame but each including the passenger on two counts added to the situation. If I can recall there were six contributory factors that all combined. Now I have said too much. There are always points that all should think about when reading this thread, Safty should be all oporators number one concern and that the press are after only one thing and that is a good story to sell papers. James |

I would like to interject at this point (with my boring 'moderator' hat on) - I would request that specific discussion over the potential causes of incidents and accidents such as this are best left OFF these forums. Not least because there are usually many factors at play and will never be covered off fully in postings, and also because it must be remembered that these forums are VERY Google-able and visible to non-members. Feel free however to post links to articles reported on in the media about accidents - but we should never proffer reasons for them occuring. Safety is always paramount on all miniature railways, but unfortunately there are sometimes accidents. Based on previous postings in other related topics on these forums, The MRW staff would be massively grateful if we didn't get into specifics of any incident on any railway. Sorry to be a bore. Anyway - let's get back on topic - how is the Wat Tyler Railway - does anyone have an official update from the operator? |

http://www.echo-news.co.uk/news/9606042.We___re_chuffed__Wat_Tyler_mini_railway_now_UK___s_second_biggest/ Lines recently been extended - the wristbands idea is a good one, hopefully the new track is a success. |

Ther is one major mistake though. There are many railways longer than 1.2km in length (Fairbourne, RLSR, WWLR, CCLR to name four...) so it is not the second longest miniature railway in the country. Congratulations though on getting the extension open. ![]() Cheers, Dom |

If the Romney is the longest miniature railway, and Wat Tyler is second, where does that leave, for instance, the Ratty, Kirklees, Bure Valley, Wells and Walsingham, to name a few of the bigger ones. Even when you get down to the true miniature "ride" railways, I'd say that Eastleigh, Moors Valley and even Echills Wood are longer than 1.2km. Don't get me wrong, I am happy for the railway in opening its extention, and I feel the wristband rover idea is a good one, but this just seems like shoddy journalism. |

Hi All Selsig summed up exactly my thoughts, any news about a prospering railway is always excellent, but it doesn't get away from the facts. 1.2 clicks is not going to make the miniature railway record books, mind you they are certainly taking care of the speed limits, 1.2 clicks in 30 minutes = 2.4Km/hour ;-) Cheers, Ivan. |

The trouble with the press is they like to spruce things up to make it more appealing to the reader. They don't bother to gather all the facts and just jump to conclusions. Lets face it, I don't think there is a railway in existence who could honestly say they have not had a derailment at some stage or another, no matter how trivial. We have had our fair share at Hastings through the years, most of which are down to point failure being that all our points are spring loaded and we are on a beach. Kids clog them up with stones or the spring bolt can break when the loco runs on the blades, and I have to admit, a lot of the time it can be down to the drivers not checking properly before driving through. If I get through a season at HMR without some sort of mishap then its a miracle. I have to admit I myself put the front end of a loco into the pit of the turntable last year! I had been running all morning and one of the other drivers came in to pull out the second train, which involved changing the turntable. As we run through the table when turning round I went round the loop and didn't even think about it! And I admit, my error, I should have paid attention. As for carriage derailments we don't suffer to much with that, we did have an incident last year when the back carriage derailed on a crossing. The flanges on the wheels on that particular bogie were deeper and hit a stone wedged in the web of the rail. As for the press blowing things out of proportion, in 93 we suffered an hour or so of derailments on one of our corners. (about 5 in total). The local council had had complaints about the crossings either side being a trip hazard so decided to concrete them in. Then typically on august bank holiday monday we had a hot afternoon and the track warped as it could not move. Once we realized what was happening we closed to rectify the problem and about an hour later was back up and running as normal. In none of these derailments was anyone injured, however in the local paper that week it was reported that we had been derailing there all weekend and that on the SUNDAY, the day before the problem two people were taken to hospital! Yet no reporter spoke to us and when the health and safety looked into it the council accepted the liability. To use a well worn saying - don't believe everything you read in the papers! |
