I was wondering if anyone has any colour photographs or cine film of the 4-4-2 Prince Edward on the Ruislip Lido Railway in the 1950s as I have only seen Black & White stills. Also can I confirm that she is still based in Surrey and not steamable - would it be possible to restore her to operational order? As I would love her to run again at Ruislip - either as a visiting engine or on long term loan. |

Apart from the obvious boiler issues what is wrong with it? |

Possibly nothing, but I gather it is a little too long for the curves at it's current home, hence the custodian is reluctant to overhaul it. We have discussed Prince Edward before - see http://s9.zetaboards.com/MRW_Forums/topic/98027/1/ |

If it was me i would make contact with the owner and discuss a return and possible overhaul for eventual use at ruslip subjecty to permissions being granted start with the wheels and work up so tyres and valve gear cylinders and valves ect i will say its not cheap but its good fun working on overhauls |

If I was in charge at Ruislip, I'd do exactly that, and I know David would as well. Unfortunately we aren't, and I'm sorry to say that our current board have a less-than-enlightened attitude to our heritage. We're having enough trouble keeping one heritage loco (Robert) on the railway; I think trying to add another is a bridge too far for the forseeable future. But, never say never... |

Further to the post of Sept 6th. When Prince Edward arrived at Ilkley to work the Olicana Miniature Railway I got to know the then owner Mr John Harrison. As I remember he was from the North East but a close relative lived near Ilkley. I became involved with the railway in 1967 after he had run for a short time withe the railway in a small oval with a point and siding to the lock up shed. This arrangement was causing damage to the loco - the rear axle box guards had been removed to negotiate the corners. We relaid the track along the fence towards the Ilkley Lido which was just across the road from the terminus. This worked much better and remained the rough layout after Terry Stanhope converted the railway to 10.25" gauge. I understand that the coaches and possibly the loco had been purchased through Clarksons. There were two coaches with a very high centre of gravity and tram type seat backs. There is a photograph of it raising steam in the Heywood Journalissue No. 31 Autumn 1992. I think that the person working on the engine in the photograph is one of the present R&ER engineers. The engine and coaches made a brief visit to run on a portable track on the lower sun terrace at Harrogate Valley Gardens in connection with the Easter model railway. Incidentally this show each Easter provided the finance for the building of Eskdale Green station of the R&ER which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year. Very interesting, thanks for sharing your memories - Olicana is the one period of the engine's history I had not yet heard much about

Sorry. I forgot to say that the visit to Harrogate was either Easter 1968 or 1969. |
