Derek,

Just out of curiosity, I tried to find out more about the line. On MRW it says:

Weymouth Bay Miniature Railway 10 ¼ inch

HISTORY UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Address: Lodmoor Country Park, Weymouth, Dorset, DT4 7SX
Telephone: 01305 785747
Operator:

Line Length: 550 yards, Circular
First opened: 1983

Website: No Website

Locomotives

No Name Type Builder Built
1890 S/O 2-6-0DH Severn Lamb 1990
4-4wPE G.Hunt

Opening Times:

Fares: Adults £.00, Children £.00

Elsewhere it is difficult to find anything due to the fact that the railway does not have a website. When I put Bure Valley Railway into the BBC search engine I got about 500 links. I suggest that whoever buys the line needs to do something about advertising it on the web.

Regards,
David Barnes

Bure Valley Railway - The 15" gauge railway with powerful steam locomotives.
Trains between Wroxham & Aylsham in Norfolk.
Daily services between 24th March and 28th October 2018.
Please look up the BVR website, for more details.

It reads almost as if it is just one of the attractions in a popular park, a bit like the Strand Miniature Railway I used to operate in Gillingham, so it probably doesn't need to do too much advertising. Websites are always useful but in this case perhaps he has been getting enough passengers from visitors to the park. I think it is also adjacent to a large caravan park.

Er... let me think Tom...

Looks like quite an attractive line, I wonder if the Hunt loco is also included in the sale?

A quick overview in Live Local: Weymouth Bay Railway I wonder what the attractions nearby are, one looks like it might be a zoo or similar attraction?

I must admit, if I were selling a line on eBay I think I would ensure the trains in the pictures were full of people to make it look an attractive prospect!

Is the 2nd word off?? :D

Maybe your latter suggestion, and the lack of full trains is the reason for the sale?

Could be due to the GREAT SUNNY SUMMER we have had and the rise in rents and fuel. :(

True, however it does give a good idea of the surroundings and of the stock, if people aren't sitting in it!

Thanks

To be fair though, there's probably very little time to take photos of full trains; from what I can remember of a visit 6/7 years ago it was a husband and wife (and dog!) team who were rather busy collection fares, driving the train etc. Certainly when I was there trains were leaving fairly full every 5 minutes or so.

Will be interesting to see what happens with the railway - I'm quite doubtful it will actually sell on eBay but I imagine there will be a few interested parties!

Actually... come to think of it, I know someone in Weymouth who could probably be persuaded to become a train driver if I bought the railway. However severe lack of money precludes me from starting "empire building"!!

Relisted here at a lower price of £60k. Interestingly an offer of £35k was declined on the previous listing.

Now, all I need is that winning lottery ticket.... :rolleyes

Ooh - now it looks like those coaches are the same design as we had in the early days at Ruislip! Anyone care to sponsor a heritage train for our 30th Anniversary next year...? ;) :P

Relisted yet again at the price of £54k. See listing here.

Interestingly there's now more useful info about the business - rent is 10% of income, turnover approx £40k with £36k profit.

There's a set of photos on Flickr starting here that show the condition of the track as of October, looking just a little overgrown!

I think it will be a struggle to sell it in this economic climate?

Hmmm yeah that could be likely.
But i think there could be potential in it, if i remember correctly it said they ran weekdays only. Running weekends could boost the revenue considerably. CCLR's busiest summer day is by far sunday, and im sure thats the same for a lot of other railways.
Assuming that there is only the stock shown in the photo, the 2 coaches limits thing's in my view, to 12 people per trip, surely adding more coaches would increase passengers as people arnt massivly keen on waiting around for a journey that as somone stated, lasts 5 minutes.

Just my thoughts :)
