Glad you all enjoyed yourselves and I'd just like to place on record our sincere thanks to all of you who sent loco's, carriages, helped out or just visited you all made the weekend into a fabulous event and officially our best to date. That last trip will live on in my memory for a long time and probably my legs as well, feel a bit like I've run a marathon today. The only problem now is that we have to send all those lovely engines back!

Kind Regards

Stephen

You didn't answer then, I wasn't going to do any gloating the noise out of flyers chimney would have been enough!

My daughter tagged along for the trip out to the Kirklees on Sunday and having purchased her a return ticket we set off in an open directly behind 'Joan' and 'Synolda' ... she was hooked completely and was already arranging to upgrade to a 'Rover' ticket before we even arrived at Shelley :) Indeed when she saw the line-up for the last train she wanted to travel on it and endeavour to make her own way way home on foot etc! So many thanks to all involved in making for such a marvellous event.

As usual I had hardly entered the premises before I encountered both Dom and Callum ... but sadly, although I know a number of others from this forum were present in one role or another, the anonymity of these others prevented my chatting to most of them ... also a lengthy 'senior' moment means that I still cannot recall the name of the young fireman wearing the MLMR (or perhaps MPMR) cap-badge who greeted me so warmly :(

Whoever you are ... thanks :)

And one does certainly NOT want to stick one's tongue out when you do that, do we, Tom??? ;)

Yes, the muppet wearing the MPMR cap was Michael, aka Black Thunder.

Again, glad you enjoyed it, Nick! But we weren't even trying on the way up!! :P

Here are some pictures I took in the run up to the gala and towards the beginning and end of each day, I was a bit busy in between. Sorry of you think there is some excessive duplication but I could not decide which of some of the images I prefered.

I wasn't sure what to expect when I visited the Kirklees Light Railway last weekend. Whatever these expectations may have been, they were definitely exceeded by the event that did happen. Both days I ended up doing minor jobs helping out, but got a handful of cab rides as well, especially on the only female love of my life. :D The whole event was superbly run by Stuart, who - along with Steve and many other KLR volunteers- tirelessly made sure everything ran smoothly throughout the entire two days, even catching up a 30-minute delay at one point.

To top this off, trains were often quite well-loaded, with a lot of smiling faces from both staff and public, which greatly helped the overall successful feel. Some great laughs were had, even if things didn't quite go to plan (the several priming issues being one of them). We also found a new contender for Craig's smoking last year (see below), though I didn't get any footage of Simon's efforts (coaling up before the downhill drift through Shelley Woodhouse tunnel = bad idea).

The highlight of Saturday had to be the night-time 20.00 Sutton Express with Stephen and Stuart driving, but the weekend couldn't be topped by the quadruple-headed Sand Sutton Express with Red Dragon/Prince of Wales (she was sporting both nameplates), Synolda, Joan and Flyer flogging up the cutting with the brakes half-on (naughty Stuart :P ), everyone in the open coach getting covered with the contents of Synolda's boiler and Flyer's fire. The sound in the tunnel, with the whistling, cannot be described. Austin jumping off and taking pics during the slower parts, and Stephen doing sanding, provided some banter from the open coach as well.

As is normal, the published loco roster went to pot in a few cases, but everyone was kept happy. The only downside was that Belle failed twice with leaking tubes so could not participate in the Sand Sutton Express. :(

I think I'm going to have to get a Fotopic site, because I took 175 photos over the weekend, and it was hard to trim them down to go on here.

Until then though, here's a (few) to keep you happy.

Saturday morning I arrived just in time for the 10.30 to depart, with Flyer on the front with Ben in charge.

Synolda and Jay arrive after Synolda's test run.

Badger simmers on shed.

Synolda prepares to draw out the second Sutton rake from the sheds.

Joan and Pet return with the first Cuckoo's Nest shuttle.
Posted Image

Followed by Fox on the KLR's own coaches.
Posted Image

Synolda and Joan begin their first ascent of the hill to Shelley (Craig you have compeition here) :P
Posted Image

And reach the top to find Owl waiting in Platform 2.
Posted Image

A shot taken later in the day of Synolda and Joan at Shelley. Spot the MRW celebrities. :P
Posted Image

By the time we got to Skelmanthorpe on the way back down, Chris Shaw was having a turn on Sutton Flyer.
Posted Image

At Cuckoo's Nest we waited for Dudley and Pet on the shuttle.
Posted Image

Pet on arrival of one of the shuttles - photo taken later in the day.
Posted Image

Once back at Clayton West, Hawk and Owl arrive with a double-headed KLR service.
Posted Image

Later, Hawk had a trip on the shuttle, but soon caught up with Pet having a "blow-up" at Cuckoo's Nest.
Posted Image

And then released the section for the double-headed Sutton Express in the twilight.

The double-headed Suttons at Shelley.

That was Saturday in a nutshell. Sunday to follow below.

Sunday dawned bright, sunny and warm. My first trip was on Pet, triple-heading the Cuckoo's Nest shuttle with Joan and Red Dragon/Prince of Wales.
Posted Image

Double-headed Suttons as viewed from behind Red Dragon/Prince of Wales's tender.
Posted Image

Synolda returns after her own solo run up the valley and back. Both PVZ and Paul the pilotman said it was a real experience, with Synolda right on her limit.
Posted Image

Joan on a top-and-tailed Clayton West - Skelmanthorpe shuttle with Synolda at the downhill end.
Posted Image

Later, Pet takes a second attempt at a solo Shelley run. However, she only got as far as Skelmanthorpe due to slippage and consequent time lost. On approach to Cuckoo's Nest:

Defnitely the highlight of the weekend was the Sand Sutton Express, headed by all four Atlantics. A pic of the train at Clayton West:

Can't wait for what might be in store next year. Once again, thanks to all, definitely converted to 15" now!! :D

Video of the proceedings to follow shortly. ;)

Cheers,

Bloody shame about the slipping. We'd got a stonking fire, belly full of water and the safeties just about to crack, all the way up to Cuckoo's nest, but before we left, we did say we wouldn't hold up the timetable, so with much dissapointment, we followed Stuart's decision despite much encouragement to " forget " to stop whilst running around.
Saturday's run was done with a poor fire and low pressure, but we had the grip! Maybe next year...please ;)
