As i see it a loco is the same loco if it has the following

. origianal mainframes
. improvements are non astheticly altering
and finally it runs the same as built if not better
Shame about Scotsman then as it does not have its own frames.

Sorry Anthony, was dragged in there..... :ninja

I think peoples views on this vary as much as how to differentiate between Miniature and Narrow Gauge!

neither did i!!! how did you know about the tender?
I have a copy of the 7mm NG Association's collection of Ratty drawings, which mentions the fact on it's drawing of the tank wagon :)

As for Scotsman, according to Heritage Railway the remaining 1923 components are the cab, three of the four cylinder valve guides and possibly the rear half of the frames. So now you know!

I say restore and run the engines, run them to the ground, then restore them and run them again!

If people insist on preserving the originality of engines, then eventually everything will be stuffed and mounted to preserve the fabric of the locos.

As for the whole "replacing of frames" thing, locos in BR days on heavy overhauls would occasionally recieve a set of brand new main frames to replace those that were cracked to hell. The GWR were fans of this (well they did recycle damned near everything). in fact as I'm on that topic, we can just about assume that most big GWR locos are actually not, as they would recieve new motion and cylinders and other assorted bits (even new chassis) from other locos being scrapped or rebuilt or in for a "heavy".
