We will be offline for a number of days (as short a time as possible) from the 1st of November to reorganise the new forum format and its skin, and make sure everything works properly. This is unavoidable I'm afriad.

Please make sure you let us know by the 1st all your comments and suggestions for the future of the forum.

Thanks
Peter

I think the aim of reducing the 'where can I find x' issue is key - currently, there are just too many corners to go to in order to find things. The problem is how to implement it, clearly and simply, without writing a huge list of do's and dont's. I can see the logic behind per-gauge headings, but the problem is that the 'everything else' bucket becomes the default when people can't be bothered to think where to put a post. I'd prefer this one to go, but can't see any easy way of doing it. Unfortunately, I don't have any off-the-peg answers, but doing something and giving it a go seems a good way to go.

Good luck guys, and thanks for the time and effort you spend in keeping this thing going, it IS worth it.

Oh yes, and of course apple green would be a fine colour as a background (indeed, the best colour, other than Garter Blue). In fact, anything but that awful darker green that some other railways use. . . .

That new design looks much easier to navigate, I like the way that Railways and stock are now in one place. I feel one of the current defects is the Sub boards such as those of 'The MRW History Archive' are shown in relitavley small writing inside the description on the main page and therefore some may skip past them.

I think the Everything else section is a bit too much of a catch all. I suggest adding 9.5" as a separate section, make 12.25" into 12.25/12", add a Greater than 21" section and then have a Mixed and unusual section. But having said that I will be the first to agree that my opinion counts for considerably less than those actually doing the work and I will be content with whatever is decided.

Best wishes, Rick

You could try having 'gauges between' forum - ie up to 7.25, 9.5 to 12.5, 15 to 21 and 'others' as a catch-all.

What about a section of the forum where people can put dates of days when anyone can go to a particular railway and volunteer....for example CCLR's trackwork weekends etc

Personally I have no problem with the existing site layout but as you want to change it then I make my comments on the proposal. I would prefer not to have the railways split by gauge but either by region or a split between Railways (Topics other than rolling stock) and Railways (Rolling stock topics) broadly as they are now.

I make that suggestion for several reasons -

1) Where do miniature railway centres like Kirklees or Eastliegh with lines of different gauges fit in?

2) Browsing for intersting topics will become complicated with the originally suggested split by gauge.

3) There are lines existing that I have no idea of the gauge of therefore if I was browing for example the 15 inch guage thread I would not see items about 20 inch lines and so on.

4) Posts on many topics are not gauge specific so they will either be unseen by many readers or there will be a main post followed by multiple cross posts saying see thread in the XYZ list.

5) Our Society (SLS) own the historic locomotive Orion and I note that any posts about the loco would have to go into the other gauges thread, despite the relevance by size to the gauges just above and just below 9 1/2 inch which have their own threads. Would they look in the other threads?

I also support the earlier suggestion of an Events list.

Grouping the models and real construction threads side by side does make sense.

Hope the above helps the webmaster evaluate options. It is a tricky issue, I use three railway related forums regularly and others with less frequency. Each has good and bad points, none has the perfect design of the topic threads but all three I regularly browze, of which this is one, are usable.

I also support the earlier suggestion of an Events list.
The Events list is certainly something we are looking to do. I tried (unsuccessfully really) to do one this summer, but a proper attempt at one with a definite structure is certainly being considered. However, this section would be heavily modded and would require members to notify the Staff of upcoming events; the Staff then posting the event in the list, and a separate thread for its discussion made in the relevant Forum.

I also find your view on splitting railways by region rather than gauge interesting, certainly something for discussion there.

Thank you for making the time to voice your thoughts, please keep them coming.

Cheers,

Dom Greenop

i got an email today from MRW forum, which stated that not many people had responded to the request for mods to the site... i feel like i have had a naughty letter sent home from school to my parents, so to ease my conscience, i am putting in my bit.....

i totally agree with the 'posts since your last visit' idea! im not often away for more than a day, but it would be nice on that rare occasion, to be able to see whats been happening, rather than having to find it, or back track to see whats been said...

my next thing is, i noticed the other night when looking at the members page, that there are quite a large number of members who have never posted. I think it would be 'polite & sociable' that part of the signing up process requires that at the very least, you put a 'hello i'm so and so' message before you become a full member of the forum.

Suppliers & Services topic... i think for those of us who are involved in the construction & maintenance of locos & rolling stock, and permanent way etc, it would be very very useful to have a page devoted to listing suppliers of various railway related items, and also any companies that have provided a service in a railway related way. This could also include feedback etc...
Also, this section could allow members to advertise their services. i.e, if they are able to do a certain task, such as machining, welding, designing, electrical equipment. they could advertise themselves, if they are willing to undertake jobs for others, for cash, or 'swapping', which could benefit others...

... thats all i can think of so far...

John

Not sure I'd agree with that personally. Sad though it is, I think the prejudice shown against railway enthusiasts by many people discourages a lot of people from admitting to their hobby, and of course once you put your name to something on the internet anyone can find it. I don't think it's fair to exclude people from following the forum just because they don't want to make a public statement of their hobby.

Many thanks to all (!) who have taken the time to reply to this. The staff are currently looking at whats been said and the best way to implement them.

Needless to say the board will remain open until we are ready to change over.

The Staff.

Hi All!
Latest update for you. We have created the new headings and are in process of moving all the topics across, which all needs doing individually unfortunatly! We are moving them from the back of the listings, which means some topics may be invisible for a little while.
Once we have most across we can turn the new headings on and finish the job, hopefully keeping the forums online for as much as possible!

Sorry for the inconvenience, but it will be worth it!

Craig
