Hi She is now at the Rudyard Lake Steam Railway, where she runs now and then. Recently shes had a few problems with her valve gear. She now runs in Apple Green rather than blue. My question is why does it keep breaking itself now? Alex |

Poor design and/or poor / inadequate maintenance are the usual culprits! Edited by bvr379, 11 Feb 2009, 12:08 AM.

hi first i all i would like, all rumours to be cleared up now, about waverley simply because, i don't like the fact, it has just been said, that she gets poor maintaince, which is not true, as i have devoted a hell of a lot of my time other the years, to looking after her, so much so, now feel rudyard doesn't want me there. but thats another story). Waveley came to rudyard in 2002 for the gala, she then stayed, as the owners felt we would use her more, (which is true), she then went up to boness in 2004 for her 10 year boiler overhaul, and came back in 2005 to the railway, where i was intodruce to her. but she was put together in a rush for the gala, so had a few problems. From there she stayed in the back of the shed for half a year, where i felt really sorry for it, and started to clean it, and i am very very grateful to the owners, for letting me then look after her, as like a caretaker. & from there on, (with the guiden of the owners and a volunteer alan boon, i looked after her. Then in 2007 on the gala, her cross head shead its bolts, becuase you see, she's a well built loco, and goes brilliantly, but with being 50 years old, well should we say shes starting to show it. thus we occasionly dismantles her valve gear. but then in october 2007 to 2008 feb i spent every spare miniute i had taking her apart, cleaning her, while, ian burgess (signal man, painted her for me, and alan boon overhauled the motion. she then entered service, and was relutane at first, but works brill now, apart frm in october a pin cam loose and every thing went wrong form there. But laterly i'v been living down south training for network rail, so i havn't been able to come up and repair her. But i would be very grateful if people, would reframe from insulting me by saying shes poorly maintained, etc. but if any one would like to see picture of her, there are pictures of her on my website. Kindest Regards Adam Jeffrey RLSR RVR |

Didn't the valve gear on the Stapleford locos give trouble? Isn't this why John Gretton rebuilt or had rebuilt the valve gear on the Loco currently bearing his name into the current unusual arrangement. Richard |

There is nothing wrong with Baker valve gear as such. The problem with the Curwen Atlantics is that the valve gear is too flimsy for the power the engine can develop. The boiler and cylinders are similar in size to our Exmoor 2-4-2's but the valve gear a fraction of the size. I beefed up the valve gland retainers to a massive 7BA last year- the biggest size I could go to in the space. Both the ex Stapelford engines will have new valve gear soon. David Nicholson at Trago Mills is well on with replacing the gear on Blanche of Lancaster. This will retain Baker valve gear and so should look better than the appendeges hung on the outside of John Gretton. Hopefully this will be in use this year and we have been promised the remains of the old sets. Kind though that offer is it will not solve the basic problem and it may be better to copy his solution which looked much better when I saw it last year if it works ok. Who knows it may appear at Rudyard in October at our Gala. Adam was rightly fed up with ill informed comments about poor maintenance as he has put in a tremendous amount of work on the engine as have most of the volunteers at Rudyard. I was not very impressed with the comment either particularly in view of the source but I'll get over it. Mike Hanson I have no doubt that Waverley will be covering our faces with soot and grime later this year in its own fashion. |

Hi Adam, Please accept my apologies if you believe that I was having a go at the person who has maintained “Waverly”. My intension was to give a general comment upon the usual causes of problems with locomotives. I appreciate how you must feel if you have spent a lot of your valuable time trying to improve things, but then only get complaints. I hope that your apprenticeship goes well. I started on BR(SR) at Dorking in the Civil Engineering Dept and spent my last four years, before retirement, as a BR consultant to the Kowloon Canton Railway in Hong Kong. So once you have got your qualifications I hope that you will be able to travel around the world. You will always find your experience with steam locomotives opens all sorts of doors, wherever you go. Best wishes for the future. |
