I have been passed this photograph to try and identify the locomotive and/or railway.

All we know it was taken on 7th June 1938 by photographer J F O'Neill, at Virginia Water in Surrey.

Any ideas please? I have never heard of a railway there.

Looks like an odd beast....

Peter, that looks like one of the locos that used to run on the post-Bullock era 18" line at 'California in England' which I think was that way on. There was an article (by Rex Hora?) with an illustration of it in an old TNG.

This could either be the same line, or perhaps a later one elsewhere?

Colin, many thanks - spot on!

"The Narrow Gauge" No.159 (page 26) has an excellent article about the railways there by Rex Hora (who incidentially also lives in my home town!). There is a picture there of the locomotive - actually a view from the other side.

So, it was an 18in gauge 4-6-0 steam outline locomotive powered by a 14NHP petrol engine and was built in 1938.

I suppose Virginia Water and California in England are not that far apart in the great scheme of things!

Many thanks again Colin - go to the top of the class!
