I went on holiday down to Hampshire over easter, and whilst I was there I managed to get to 2 miniature railways

On good Friday, me and dad visited Ruislip Lido, Severn Lamb diesel hydraulic Bayhurst was running in drizzly conditions. Here it waits before taking the last round trip from Woody Bay

Then on Easter Monday, I managed to persuade the family that the Moors Valley country park would be a nice place to visit. We rode on the railway first before being given a tour of the sheds at Kingsmere, including loco sheds, carriage sheds, workshop, signal box etc etc. This was absolutely brilliant, and I should give a big thankyou to everyone we spoke to for their time in giving us the full tour, if any of them were forum members well it was nice to meet you :) I can thoughrally recommend a visit!

The loco sheds. On the right is Jason, with Talos, Tinkerbelle and Media hidden behind. the right middle road held Persius and Robert Snooks I think, the left middle road had William Rufus and Pioneer whilst on the left road was Aelfred and Thor.

Running on trains was Zeus, Sapper and Hartfield, here is Zeus at Kingsmere

Again manay thanks to all those at the MVR who showed me and dad round, it was much appreciated :)
Note: We did not bother asking for a shed tour at Ruislip as it was raining and we didn't want to miss the last train back round the lake but the staff there were just as friendly

Ah yes hence the parking charges being stupidly high!!

You were lucky they tend to close the car park when it gets full.....

Yep. Went to visit the Ruislip Lido and the railway last year, but only joined a long que for the car park, went three times around the full car park and then decided to go somewhere else. Never saw the railway. So, if you intend visiting the line arrive early!
David Barnes

Bure Valley Railway - The 15" gauge railway with powerful locomotives.
Trains between Wroxham & Aylsham in Norfolk.
Santa will be arriving soon, followed by Mince Pie Specials from 27 Dec 2009 until 3rd Jan 2010.
For Bure Valley Railway info. see: BVR website, which includes timetables.

Ruislip Lido wasn't a problem for us parking wise (and it was free parking as well), but it was a horrible drizzly day so things were quiet

That's just it. On drizzly days, it's hardly worth our while running trains. On fine days, everyone in the area descends on the Lido and the car park can't cope :rolleyes I'm sure there must be other miniature railways that have similar problems!
However, if you do want to visit the RLR on a busy day, I should perhaps point out that it is possible to get to the lido by public transport. Take the Metropolitan or Piccadilly lines to Ruislip station, then catch the H13 bus.
