We need help. Can anyone suggest any fund raising ideas. It turns out the rumour about Lady's bolier are true. Trevor finally got into the boiler on Saturday and it's not good news. We had a bout of dodgey water a few years ago and although we used boiler treatment it didn't stop the acid erroding the boiler. Sadly if we can't afford to have the work done Lady will have to be sold on or even scrapped :( . Hopefully it won't come to the cutters tourch (i think John was pannicking when he mentioned it), but if the price we get is to high then Lady will have to go :( . So if you have any ideas let me know either in a post or via a PM.

Thanks in advance,
Michael.

Hi Mike,
Doubt its the dodgy water, would expect more that its because its 13 years old, which is good for a boiler that has seen enough use as that one has! People forget that a boiler is a consumable part which will not last forever.
At worst a new boiler will probably be £10K, absolute maximum. Katies is only going to be about £12K and thats much bigger. The boiler for Joan and Austins atlantic which i think is slightly larger was about £6K a few years ago.

However, If she is going to get "scrapped" or sold, please let me know!

Craig

Come on! Its not the end of the world for gawds sake! Its a consumable part that has to be replaces on every miniature steam loco occasionally!

Do Exmoor build their own boilers in-house or does an outside boilermaker do them?

If it's in-house then surely it won't be as much - as a stand-alone item - as an external concern.. ...? I thought she was getting an overhaul too so it would just be an item on the list after all's said and done... ...

Cheers,

We went through this some years ago with River Churnet/ Excalibur where it was cheaper and much more sensible to replace the boiler than repair it. The cost is not simply the cost of a new boiler but the stripping down, refitting and the costs of the other work its sensible to do at the same time i.e. replace bearings, repainting etc and again its not the marterial costs but the costs of doing the work which is significant. The cost we faced was significant but very fair and value for money.
However we still had to find the X thousands and so I have every sympathy. Scrapping the loco is just not sensible as even without a boiler its worth many times the scrap value so I think we can discount that as a (dis)orderly line will form if its for sale at anything like scrap value.
If you cant find the money locally I would have thought you should be able to raise it commercially given the trade the railway does and its potential. Another option is to form a syndicate and sell shares and there are some examples of this ( Sian, Waverley) which seem to work ok

Woe and thrice woe. I feel sympathetic also, but I know of several similar stories at different rlys including our own.

John should take heart that the Stirlands are around to fix it - the situation would surely be worse without them. The 'comparable' prices quoted above are for a 2 to 3 year wait followed by a boiler only with a hydraulic test.

Maybe those on the forum who are not practitioners would like to contribute to a fighting fund, to help out rlys like MPLR trying to cope with cyclical costs unexpectedly high - a bit like our version of the World Bank. I fear that there would be many more applications for support than contributions. I'm just off to prepare our application now...

Best Wishes

Simon

I think reaching out into the local community for support is definately a good idea. Remember that any publicity for a boiler appeal would be indirectly adverstising the railway itself too, thus hopefully attracting more custom...
