In 'The Eskdale Railway' by Peter van Zeller it's noted that "Greenly designed River Esk as a one-third scale 2-8-2 with a Great Western motif to keep Sir Aubrey happy." Sir Aubrey Brocklebank was a director of the G.W.R and was the R. & E. R.'s sponsor and instigated the program of rebuilding when he took over in 1924. This is another possible explanation for the G.W. styling.

On the other hand, when Little Giant was first built many commentators felt her styling was more reminiscent of the NER - and the Great Western weren't the only company to use brass saftey valve bonnets...

Oh there's no doubt that the Bassett-Lowke Atlantics were based on the N.E.R mainline prototypes, the lines are so similar. Richard and I were commenting on the cabs fitted to Esk and Irt (when first rebuilt from Muriel) :)

A 3D mock up of what the proposed locomotive may have looked like.

It looks a bit small to my eye running with the currently available R&ER stock and the Romney route, possibly due to miscaling on my part on the other stock (the Heywood loco is built exactly as the plans suggest). But I don't know?

Hmm...I must admit it does come out rather small. I was under the impression that it would come out more the size of Northern Rock, but there we are...maybe she would look better with Bassett-Lowke 4-wheelers? Never mind, it's a great piece of modelling! :)

Exactly my thinking Murray, which is why I can't understand why it has come out so small as it was built strictly to the plans?

I have posted a comparison of the two below.

Having re-looked at the measurements, I was actually slightly under, and have rescaled accordingly, this still however doesn't bring it up to the size of NR, but actually pared together, it looks okay.

Brilliant work, looks spot on ahead of Northern Rock there, working from the original drawings the loco without tender was to be 15' 9" over frames and 5' 8" high from railhead to the top of the cab. How this compares to Northern Rock in reality I don't know. Comparing to River Esk though the Super Heywood would have been somewhat bigger, Esk being 13' 2 3/8" long and 5' 6 5/8" high from the railhead. (Measurements taken from side elevetion in the W J K Davies' book.)

I think that sounds about right. The side length of it is about the same as Northern Rock, and the reason the impression is that it is smaller is the lack of any vertical height. The cab is very small in comparison to Rock and the boiler sits much lower than on Rock.

Hi Ben,

You know, it's interesting to compare Esk and Rock dimensionally, (there's some basic side elevation on the R&ER website).
As far as I can see, Rock is very much a beefed up Esk/Mite, (and lets face it, if it ain't broke, don't fix it) the most obvious aspect of this is the boiler center lines are similar on all three locos. I would imagine that the designers of Rock would have been aware of the restricted width space on the 'scale' locos but also how awful the extra width of Irt looked. The obvious answer was to build upwards and to achieve more pleasing proportions.
However, the basic argument still stands, Rock is ostensibly a wider version of Esk but with a taller chimney, dome and cab.

Incidentally Ben, what modeling package are you using now?
Andrew.

Andrew,

It is very true, I think the real major difference has to be the size of the cab on Rock and Irt really.

I'm still using the faithful TSM, however I do now have 3D Studio Max, but I've never really learnt how to use it!

Couple of new pictures, including one posed with my (rather poor) model of River Esk.
