I was following the route of the RH&DR on Google Earth and between the bridge under Kereton Road and the level crossing with Battery Road there appears to be the formation of a turining triangle. I was intrigued by this and was wondering if anyone could shed some light on it. Tim have you any ideas?

Cheers,
Michael

It has been discussed on here before, although I can't find the original topic.

It was either something to do with the war or a turning triangle when the line to Dungeness was under construction and the balloon loop wasn't ready I think.

it was when the line to dungeness was being constructed they ran trains as far as there until the rest was finished. i think it lasted one season and there are a few and i mean very few photos of it in use. I must admit it was Howey doing what Howey did best with the romney throwing his money at it to get what he wanted which has left us with the fabulous railway we have today

Thanks for the info guys. While i think of it, when the line to Dungeness was double track how did the baloon loop work? Was it double track all the way round or did it split into two and run as a single line up to the station area split for the passing loop then single out again? If you have any info on this i would be gratefull.

Cheers,
Michael

It ran as it is now, with the exception that there was no Britannia Points, and the return side just joined the up line. (I believe)

As far as I know, The triangle was laid between Kerton Road (Bridge) and Battery Road (level x-ing) while Howey was waiting for the Light Railway Order for the extension. This enabled trains to run as far as The Pilot on the down line, the loco turn and return to Hythe on the up line, while the line was completed to Dungeness.

It is still clearly visible today (if you know where to look), which is surprising as I'm led to believe that it was lifted in less than a year. Also the old up line is also visible almost all the way from Britannia points to Romney Sands

And as Ben says, the down line just continued around the loop and then ran back to New Romney, I think that a crossover was installed, to enable the War Department to take posession of the up line, when the sound mirrors were being constructed behind Maddisons Camp (Romney Sands)

Tim is, as always, completely correct.

I worked guard on the Dungeness section yesterday and you can very clearly see the trackbed of the turning triangle. As you are running on the down line you can see the shingle bank on which the trackbed sat just beyond Kerton Road bridge which curves away to the right and into the shunt at the end (which is right angles to the running line). This then returns back in towards the running line as you approach Battery Road and can be seen where the grass has grown around the trackbed showing the formation. It was only in existence for just less than a year before it was lifted and for the reasons stated by Tim :)

I will try and get some photos next time I am out and about with the camera.
Kind Regards

Mark

You can still see the piece of vertical rail that was used as a temporary buffer at the point of the triangle if you look carefully, which isn't bad considering it been there for over 80 year.
