Good luck with this project Kelvin, I'm sure we'd be glad to host her as a visitor at Cleethorpes once completed. Having seen it sit at the back of the shed for so long, it's nice to see something happening!

Safely on the rails.

Those bogies look interesting Kelvin. Did you design and build them yourself?

What is the dia. of the wheels please?

Best wishes,
David Barnes

For a moment I thought you had hitched a lift with Typhoon :D It looks so much bigger in your garden than in the yard at Cleethorpes! Good luck with the project Kelvin.....

David, I believe the bogie is of Trevor Guest origins, ex-Dudley Zoo Railway.

Yep Colin is right, as far as the experts tell me, it is the centre bogie from an Ex. Guest DZR articulated coach. The bogie has a wheel dia of 12".

Correct, though not necessarily the artic set, as these all survive intact I think.

My money is on it being one off coach number 20, a 14 seat open which seems to have vanished into oblivion. Interestingly Gwril, the 4w BE at Fairbourne, is built upon a similar bogie, and 2 make a coach worth, so that may hold the answer!

Thank you Colin and Kelvin for the information about the bogies, because the BVR is proposing to develop some vehicles with a similar type of suspension. Any further info about the bogies, such as ride quality, would be very useful. I do not believe in re-inventing things.

The other alternative mooted is that Keef (who sold Kelvin the bogie) removed and replaced the end bogie from the artic set at Cricket St Thomas when they added the drviving trailer. However, I do like your theory Craig, any pictures of the mysterious coach 20?

This is a drawing that Colin posted on an earlier thread we had about the bogie. The previous owner said that when he bought it from Alan Keef's it still had the suspension beam and springs fitted to it, but he scrapped it as it was too heavy for him to move. I think we may perhaps never now it's true origin, but it is a good talking point anway.

David, the BVR can always borrow it if you want a closer examination.

Kelvin, those closed coaches are still complete as a 4 car set however and following fairbourne and haigh went to Keefs then Bear Creek in Canada, where they still are. I believe the closed coaches were stored outside somewhere for a while before being broken up. Number 18 + 19 (or 17 + 18) were closed 12 seaters which used the fairbourne / MVR type similar to those under No 24's tender (!)

The open artic sets had different bogies to those I thought, and why would Fairbourne have bought back the other bogie to build Gwril on (it is definitely built on the same bogie design)???

All interesting. Perhaps the answer lies in finding out what the bogie Gwril is built on is from....

Craig.
The bogies under 24's tender are not MVR ones but we do have a set of MVR bogies that have been regauged up to 15" in the past .
