Often regarded as the poor relation to steam locos, 'fake steam' locos powered by anything other than steam have been the staple of many a miniature railway. Often derided by enthusiasts but beloved of visitors and economically-minded operators alike, these so-called 'Pretenders' have their place in both history and the present. Many can be said to be true models - in that they really do get quite close to the appearance of a 'real' steam loco. Others are caricatures or fanciful interpretations of steam locomotives. Whether you love or hate them, they're here to stay. Personally, I adore them. Their versatility and individuality (and often imagination that fired their design) are, I think, what can make miniature railways so intriguing. SO: Over to you. What are your favourites, your most hated, the most ridiculous or the most interesting steam outline locos that you've come across? I'll start with mine. Baguley 2ft gauge 'Altonia', ![]() http://www.towerstimes.co.uk/history/articles/endofline.htm (and the Wicksteed Park variants, among others...) The Hudswell-Clarke Pacifics and Tanks, now at Blackpool, Scarborough and Butterley: ![]() from http://www.flickr.com/photos/bispham2/326250170/ My own attempt (my first ever miniature railway project, back in 2001) ![]() Can't forget the wonderful contraptions built for Battersea and Southport... in whichever guise they appeared, whether as 'Emmets', streamliners or even with the Southport Belle Pier diesel bodies on top... ![]() ![]() from http://www.lakesideminiaturerailway.co.uk/ And perhaps the delightful ex-Chessington 'Rocket'. I could go on! Your turn, chaps... |

My favorites were always the Barlows at Southport, I always found them much more characterful then Princess Anne the western (this was the days when John Spencer was running the LMR and me and dad used to visit quite regurley) |

Of course BVR #1 "Wroxham Broad" spent her younger years as "Tracy Joe" - an IC loco, until the BVR fitted her with a boiler in 1991 see: http://www.davesrailpics.bravehost.com/bvr/bvr.htm - second & fourth pictures. There is a lot to be said for a locomotive that you can "Switch on" and go. |

David Barnes Bure Valley Railway - The 15" gauge railway with powerful locomotives. Trains between Wroxham & Aylsham in Norfolk. Santa will be arriving soon, followed by Mince Pie Specials from 27 Dec 2009 until 3rd Jan 2010. For Bure Valley Railway info. see: BVR website, which includes timetables. | |

I'm sure this topic has been done before! http://s9.zetaboards.com/MRW_Forums/topic/7027311/1/ Mine have to be the Hudswell Clarke Baltics & Princess's followed closely by a certain tank loco I used to own now resident on the east coast... Finished off by Clara, though i think it would be even better as steam. I also quite like the English Severn Lamb locos and the Older Keefs (Haigh & Blenheim) But, I don't like them really in principal. I prefer a diesel to look like a diesel if i'm honest! http://s9.zetaboards.com/MRW_Forums/topic/98396/1/ Bits in here too, but i take your point Tim! Dreaded. Hmmm. Dare I say Rio to upset Peter.... I would be lying though. Possibly the Southern Belle from Littlehampton seen here:- http://miniaturerailwayphotos.fotopic.net/p41658208.html It has to be the Roanoke 0-6-0 at Poole though seen here:- http://www.exacteditions.com/exact/browse/392/429/1759/2/36 HORRIBLE! One of the most ingenious was the mablethorpe Bo-Bo which had a loco and coach all on one frame. Edited by craiggluyas, 19 May 2009, 12:57 PM.

My faves have got to be Battison (obviously...), Tracey Joe, and the NBR/BPR/MRC HC ones, because theyre steam outlines that actually look like steam engines! As opposed to my most hated: That awful looking thing at Rhyl (its name evades my memory) and the one at Poole, which just looks so tacky and commercialised, as well as the supposed B17's at WFR and Saltburn. Favourites: Hudswell Clarkes, Tracey-Jo, Clara, Battison, the Chessington "Dukedogs". Least favourite: that ghastly contraption at Littlehampton! I must admit that for a long time I wasn't keen on Rios, but they are slowly growing on me... |
