Congratulations to Mr Mark Hewitt (Evilatco) who has finally been deemed competent to operate Hythe signalbox - well done m8

obviously time will tell if he can cope with the stress of the job, as hythe box makes his day job look like a walk in the park ;)

There speaks someone who has never done a High Season in a Romney box!

Congratulations to Mark - just remember to keep on the right side of the drivers or they can make your life hell!!!

Hi Everybody,

Thanks for all the nice comments :) Much appreciated :)

What can I say.... it was a pink service day with lots and lots of shunting in pretty warm weather... and the best thing was that it was loads of fun and I was given loads and loads of support by everybody :) I really enjoyed it!!

I'm not sure if I've mentioned it on these forums but I owe an enormous debt of gratitude to Tim Gray for the endless enthusiasm, instruction, advice and support that he continually gives me. It is through his boundless commitment and tuition that I decided to become a volunteer at the RH&DR (following a driver experience course), got passed out as a driver on St.Egwin at Evesham Vale Light Railway and now passed out as a Hythe Signalman :) Thanks m8... I appreciate it :)

All the people who have trained me, shown faith in me, and given me the chance to fulfill my childhood dream (I will show you all the photo of where it started someday)... Thanks to you all :)

Anyway, enough of the Oscar speech :)

Kind Regards

Mark

Sorry Derek, though we were talking about Hythe box though.... I know what its like being a signalman, working Embsay box on a Thomas weekend was quite fun with trains entering from both ends, Engine swaps and shunting to battle with! Still, my Grandad was one and he says its all easy these days compares to Preston No 4!

Didn't mean to belittle it Mark. Well done mate!

it has been said that embsay box possibly could be the busiest boxes in preservation at times!

I must add that Mark's day job is an air traffic controller at London Heathrow airport, so the big question is, can he cope with the stress of Hythe box? :rolleyes

The best thing about being the signalman at Hythe is that you are all alone down the end of the platform and can keep well away from the politics that fly around the booking office - the only problem is that you have to nip up that end to use the loo every now and again. If I remember rightly as a driver there was rarely time to take a drink but a biscuit was always welcome!
