Off to Rhyl at the crack of dawn Saturday, to their annual May Bank Holiday gala, this years theme being Little Giants.

In service were residents Joan and Cagney, with Class 30 Synolda visiting from Ravenglass and partly Class 10 Red Dragon from Windmill Farm. Michael, Railway Queen and the Lister were on shed and Clara was in the workshop. Not forgetting Billy and the red box in the museum!

Three trains were in operation whilst I was there, Red Dragon with a single coach, Synolda and Joan double heading with the 'car de luxes', and Cagney (until teething problems) with the two open red coaches.

Much fun was had, and trains were busy throughtout the day.

Many thanks to all the RMR staff for their hospitality, it was a great day out.

Here are some photos from the day, I will link to a Youtube video later on.

Taking on the role of chauffeur for the day I too was out quite early, arriving at Rhyl at about 9.15 exactly-ish, to be greeted by the following scene:

All four locos raising steam outside the main station building.

Chatting and cleaning ensued, including reminisces of the Kirklees gala (me, PvZ, and Austin all agreeing that it won't be forgotten for a LONG time), with trains starting to trundle around the lake from about 10 onwards (despite an advertised first train of 10.30). After an interesting first trip, the tram was dropped off Red Dragon's train, so it only had the 6th DeLuxe coach. Synolda and Joan looked good double-heading on the five-car set, and as usual everyone was enjoying themselves.

Cagney unfortunately suffered a lubricator failure just as we were leaving, but hopefully got it back in service to continue joining in the festivities.

Shortly after lunch myself and Peter moved on to the Conwy Valley Railway Museum (pics in a separate post), meanwhile here are some pictures from Rhyl:

Thanks to all at the Rhyl Miniature Railway for a great day out, very friendly and hospitable staff and a seaside atmosphere that still holds some Edwardian charm seemingly against odds with the technological 21st Century.

Cheers,

Dom Greenop

PS - Embarrassing ptohos to follow. ;)

Did you think that I would miss out on that!! :D :D
It even went for a test run round the lake after it was tested to make sure that it couples up and that the injectors work from my tender then off we went for a spin with the 2 coaches with some off our volunteers in, cagney boy was one along with Charlie and Mr Van Zeller. All came back and only prob was a small water leak on tender. I thing it is from the left outlet pipe as I was fiddling with it for the injector pipe fitting so will take off top empty out and play with.
It may only be 15" but it is fun to play with

Looks like a good time was had by all.

Maybe Austin is hoping it comes home with it!

Looks like everyone had a great time over at Rhyl, I'm not sure about the drive-by-wire Cagney though ;)
