One of the things 'missing' from the Shifting Sands stocklist for some time has been a scale British outline loco typical of 15" lines around the UK. There is of course the US outline 'Thunderbolt' but that was only built as a very quick project and doesn't really represent anything in particular.

Whilst in an ideal world I would adore a model of a Bassett-Lowke or similar loco but there are various reasons (mostly lack of available suitable mechanisms) why that is currently a non-starter in 7mm scale on 9mm gauge track (O9).

The offer earlier this year of a Graham Farish N-gauge 'Duchess' pacific at a discount price set in motion a train of thought (groan!) that had been idle for some time, as I had eyed one of these up some time ago with a particular loco design in mind.... Trevor Guest's two pacifics....

I have kept this project mostly under wraps so far, I wanted to be confident that it could work before unveiling it. The work has been frustrating at time, I've nearly given up on a couple of occasions!

Here are a few pictures, the first batch taken in April at the point I had managed to create a boiler and running plate that fitted around the Farish motor. Boiler is 1/2" styrene tube, everything else is from various sheets or sections of styrene:

A few weeks later clearance tests were carried out at Shifting Sands to make sure the loco fitted. More details had been added by this stage:

Bringing the story up to date, some pictures from today, getting the cab looking right has taken some time (and two attempts) to achieve!

Still a fair bit to do, although most of the structural styrene work is done, just about everything else to add is in the form of brass detailing parts, chimney, dome, handrails etc. Oh, and a new smokebox door to replace the A3 one currently fitted :rolleyes

More as the project progresses....

Wow! That looks fantastic Colin! Yet again it look's like we will be suprised with your ability to make such great looking models.

There's definatley and art to building models...

Fantastic! Though you really ought to build some Fairbourne coaches to go with it... :P

what livery are you thinking of?

Looking nice ;)
Your train is cancelled due to the lack of the tea can on the footplate.

This is what happens when teamwork occurs!

Callum - livery is likely to be green...

It seems to have been a while since the last update, much of the last month has been spent altering, adjusting and adding bits to the loco body, it has all taken longer than expected, but I am now prioritising this loco in order to (hopefully) have her ready for September.

A lot of metal parts have gone on since the last update, some are firmly fixed in place, others such as pipework free until after painting.

Chimney and dome are LMS 8F parts, the dome needed some alterations to suit a parallel boiler!

Posted Image
Lubricator is scratchbuilt from a lump of Dapol railbus underframe part!

Posted Image
Safety valves are from the spares box (well, Dad's spares box...), surround from more Dapol railbus undergubbins. Injectors soldered up from wire and a spilit pin, steam pipe from wire.

Posted Image
Tender is much modified Farish 8F, with the coal space cut out, new framing and steps around the base, new bufferbeam and N-Brass buffers.

The other side of the loco. I am not too happy with the handrails, the finest 4mm scale knobs I could find are too big really. An order is in for 2mm scale knobs and finer wire, this will mean I have to plug the holes in the boiler with plastic rod, fill and re-drill. But it should look better!

Not far from the paintshop now, I hope

It sure has a nice look. I recon you have got a few ideas of our 2 Sutton locos and the Romney locos.

Gotta agree with Steve!

Not sure if its me going crazy or blind in my old age, but i can't see the said injectors anywhere?

Ah, now do I mean injectors or boiler water feeds..... ???? :D

The loco is largely based on 'Prince William' in Blenheim/Steamtown condition, there are hints of Sutton and Romney but they are all there on the original. Seeing it run on Shifting Sands is a bit like watching Typhoon at Cleethorpes though!

It will be good to see it running when you have got it finished.

The new handrails are in place, I think they capture the feel of the original loco and other 'scale' outline locos well.

I have also made up a new smokebox door handle from one of the 4mm scale knobs and some wire:

Thanks to everyone for their comments, I'm now nearly there....

That is stunning Colin, well done. I'd almost offer to line it for you, but wouldn't like to entrust myself to the job, it's so good!

Colin, your new 4-6-2 looks absolutely gorgeous! Is it based on one of the Battison 91/2" ones at Matlock by any chance . It has that look about it. Keep up the good work. cheers , Dave

Hi Dave, it is actually based on an ever so slightly stretched 'Prince William' in Blenheim/Steamtown condition. However, I'm glad you mentioned the Battison pacifics as I thought during building that there was a slight look of them in it...!
