I'm looking for info on the various 10¼ lines that operated at Southsea, Portsmouth. I know they operated on the common, and the last one started near the sea life centre but does anyone know of any pics or further info.

Many Thanks

Hi Graig,
If you can get your hands on Thames Side Promenade Miniature Railways, by Peter Scott...
This will give you quite a bit of information. Especially on the post second world war period when I believe it was operated by Judd.

The Loco's are now at Kirby Green and they feature in the Latest Heywood Journal.. as do you !!

I am currently researching the line when it was 9 1/2" gauge from 1932 until September of 1939.
The line was operated by 2 Bassett Lowke G.N.R Atlantics.

If whilst you are researching this Railway you come across anything in relation to the period I mention.
I would be very grateful if you pass it on to me.

It's Kirkby Green not Kirby Green!

Miniature Railway Mag also got it wrong in thier current issue!

Craig,

There was an article in one of the Heywood Society journals in the early 90s on the Southsea railways - will see if I can dig it out for you.

I have some postcards Craig from both periods of the line's operation.

Phil, one of the GNR Atlantics , named "Sir Edward Nicholl" is owned by Dorman's amusements, and has been seen in operation at steam rallies in the last decade.

Hi

As a child who's grand parents lived in Portsmouth I remeber two lines - one near the Lido at Hilsea and the other opposite the end of Serpentine road which ran alongside the prom - seprated by a low wall - this one ran in a balloon shape running through a tunnel - used for storing the stock I think, & returned to the liitle station to be turned on the turn table & run round. Power was steam around the 1950s. Coaching stock were all open.

I seem to remeber the Hilsea one having an accident with the driver being injured -never been able to substantiate that though.

Cheers

Craig,

Having lived in Southsea when i was at Uni in Portsmouth i became interested in the miniature railway that ran there.
As part of my Uni course was to make a documentry, and we did it on Southsea. I aplied to the Wessex Film and Sound Archive, and they transfered some old cine film onto video for me of southsea, and it featured a tiny bit of the railway. (this footage was was also available on a video about Portsmouth featuring tons of old footage wich i rented from Portsmouth City Library.)
http://www.bygonefilms.org.uk/portsmouthndex.htm

'Sunny Southsea' by Anthony Triggs has a couple of pictures. No real info, but i think it was when the railway was 9 1/2 inch gauge. Opened in 1924.

Anyway, this might be worth checking out! The footage features a steam loco and open carriages.

I found a picture online,
http://www.francisfrith.com/southsea,hampshire/photos/the-miniature-railway-c1955_s161060/

Looks like the railway used diesel power in its last few years. I discovered a few more pictures in Portsmouth Museum in old brochures for Southsea tourism. They feature this diesel loco running along near where the Sea Life Centre now is.

Hope some of this helps! I will keep digging!

Rob
